  • Which gun should I get?

    Illustrious Members of the Board,

Soon I will be taking a class and getting my concealed weapons permit. I would like to get a gun to keep at home for protection purposes, but I will also be taking it hiking with me for use against mountain lion, coyote, and perhaps bear, though I don't know I want that big of a gun just yet. What kind of handguns have you guys used and liked? What size and type would you guys recommend? Thanks! Oh, and just as a side note, I've mainly used .357 and .410 magnum revolvers in the past, and I enjoyed them both, though the .410 gets to my hand after 40 rounds or so.

Re: Which gun should I get?

Most everyone I talk to loves the Glocks. I don't really like the feel of them.

I took a liking to the Ruger 40... I think it was a P98. Went to the gun range and rented a few, and loved the 40. Not really the gun for carrying on the street though, I would think it's going to be a little on the bulky side. If your just going to be in the woods with it, it will be fine IMO.

I would suggest the same. Go and try out a few guns you might like at a gun range where you can rent their guns. You just pay for the rental, targets and rounds.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

If your using it for self protection in the woods a 357 is probably a good choice, Ive heard a 9mm will only piss off a bear, more then stop it from charging you.

Home protection, a 357 is probably over doing it.. unless you have a 500 lb beast coming at you in your sleep.

Ive shot alot of guns, and I personally love shooting 9mm, and 357's seem annoying, they kick hard, make too much noise and the ammunition is pretty costly, so is the peice itself.

I have an Intratec 9mm handgun now, and that gun is a beast, I cant stand shooting it unless I need to its so powerful.

              I have a Ruger P85 and P90

Both are great and I like the P90 9mm better then the P85 since its a bit shorter and smaller, but the P90 holds 5 more rounds.

But like stated earlier if you want something for mainly homeland and rarely wooded creatures then go 9mm. I mean, honestly how many bears will you run into that will also keep charging when you fire 4 or 5 rounds.

                Semi-auto or revolver?

                I'm a semi-auto guy...don't know too many revolver options.

What kind of features do you like? External safety? DA/SA or DAO? Cocked & Locked carry?

You're not going to find many good options for both concealed carry and bear protection. A good one to fight a bear is not going to conceal very well.

For personal protection & home defense, I would not go smaller than 9mm. Personally, I'm a fan of .45 ACP, but others prefer 9mm or .40 S&W.

Most 9mm pistols offer the ability to carry more ammo than a typical .45.

Popular pistols are Smith & Wesson M&P, Springfield XD, Sigs, and of course Glocks.

I have an HK USP Compact .45. Picture here. I love this gun. With a nice holster it conceals very well, and can be carried either cocked & locked, or decocked. IMHO, no other manufacturer comes close to HK.

Go to the gun shops in your area and handle many different guns. Find one that fits your hand perfectly.

                  This bear.. http://mbz.org/info/fun/grizzly/.images/Tedbear1.jpg

The bear charged a park ranger while he was deer hunting in the woods, its the world record holder for largest bear, 13' ft tall at the shoulders and over 1,600 lbs.

The park ranger if i remember correctly unloaded two full clips into it before it stopped.

when they did the autopsy :lmao: on the bear, they found it has killed other humans recently and has been shot by some other caliber weapon prior to him.

Thats an obese pist off bear!

well, in my opinion, you may be asking too much if you want a good carry gun, as well as something that will take down a bear.

#1 thing to remember with regards to a conealed carry gun.... if its not comfortable to carry, you wont be carrying it when you need it!

to take down a bear, you usually need something .45 caliber and up. and even a .45, it best be a good shot.

to carry, most people like the previously mentioned 9mm or .40 S&W. Both very nice concealed carry guns, with good stopping power and excellent clip capacity. Both these guns can be made to accept double stack clips and still fit your hand comfortably. a .45 however, is usually only a single stack clip. .45 GAP cartridge however, is a nice round that can be made to fit in a double stack clip and still be comfortable for most people.

Smith and Wesson .357.....you can use the .38 rounds for practice and taking your concieled weapons test, and load the big boys for home protection and those vicious bear attacks. Still my favorite and I own a Glock 45, S&W 9mm, and a Ruger 45. It's simple, easy to use, less moving parts, easy to clean if you drop it in the dirt while you're out hunting, and safer (my uncle's a cop, and he's told me plenty of stories about Glocks shooting his buddys in the foot when they rub up against something, get in a scuffle, fall, etc.). He's Highway Patrol and still carries S&W .357 by the way.................and hey, as far as "overkill", if someone breaks in my house, they're not gonna live to sue me for getting cut on the glass they broke on the way in.

i would take a look at the springfield xd series. the sub compact 40 is a nice small package that still packs quite a punch.

my favorite handgun (and the one i would use) is a beretta 9mm, but if you think you would run into a bear go with a .45+ caliber IMO.
