  • Robbie Gordon shows real class

Robbie Gordon is providing a car for Ambrose to race at Watkins Glen. He also arranged for sponsorship.

    http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2...07/057676.html

Two guys get into it bad in a race. They each spin the other out in dubious circumstances (Ambrose spun Gordon under the yellow, Gordon spun Ambrose while black flagged). Each cost the other the win. And the much more experienced driver turns around and gets the new guy a good ride in a better series.

Spare me "This just shows how bad..." stuff. Imagine it was that other Gordon. Or Tony Stewart. And a new driver like Ambrose. Can you imagine them doing this in a million years? And the resources involved mean a whole lot less to them.

For that matter can anybody tell me when something like this has ever happened?

I've always been a fan of R Gordon, anyone who can be one of the only owner/operator teams left in a series dominated by 3-4-5 car teams and stay fairly competitive week in and week out deserves some applause. Some of the things he says or does may be off balance but if earnhardt or stewart does them people will more often than not cheer.

I am not a R. Gordon fan (or a J Gordon one), but he has worked hard to keep his teams up and running.

If he wasn't such an a-hole, maybe he could keep a sponsor.

All said though, this does show class.

It's about time they got a good driver for that car. It's all a publicity stunt, notice how that article turned into a commercial. But they are probably scared Gordon won't be able to drive for the rest of the year. LOL Besides if they cared so much they would have found out that Robby spells his name with a Y not an IE.

You forgot to mention how Gordon passed Ambrose under the caution also. Which is probably the reason he got spun out.

Of course it reads like that. So do driver interviews. Sponsors make the cars go round.

When Robbie passed Ambrose it was right at the instant the caution came out. There was no reason Robbie would have known the caution was out, and he said he would have been fine with being put back to second. If Ambrose thought that Robbie passed him under the yellow, he had only to wait and be put back into first, which happens all the time.

When Ambrose passed Gordon the caution had been out for some time. The video shows the corner worker madly waving the yellow flag at them before they even got to the corner when Ambrose spun Gordon out. The worker's right where they're looking as they enter the corner (the location is chosen for a reason). There's no way Ambrose didn't see it.

There's no excuse for either spin out. Gordon has acknowledged that. But Gordon's pass was clean, even if the caution was just coming out and might have invalidated it.

Gordon has just been put on probation.

Sports car racing used to have occasional instances of this type of sportsmanship.

Magic Johnson would give up points to give out assists often back in the Showtime days...
