Rec Me a 4-Banger

So I'm looking for a new car. What I'm looking for is a good, reliable, 4 banger, preferably newer (97+) around $5000 or so. It doesn't have to be super fast, but I wanna be able to have some fun with it. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

well if your looking for a beater. you could always get a honda. why not just get another fbody? if you want cheaper gas get a 3.4

My 4-bang gets 25 MPG where my 3.4 only gets 17 - 18.

For that price, I'd have to say a Cavalier Z24. Good acceleration, great on gas, and cheap. The only thing I did to the one I had was add an intake and it helped a lot. I saw 30 mpg a few times, but usually got 27-28 and that's driving "spiritedly". But as with most GM cars, things will begin to break on them after that many miles..

Still, I wouldn't recommend the 3.4 for a gas car. A friend of mine has one, and she only gets like 15, and it's bone stock and she takes it in for tune-ups every month or so......My 3.8 does pretty good, I just got 25 MPG with about a 50/50 mix of highway and city. Plus you add in my lead foot, and that's pretty dang good.

Just buy any old 4 cylinder turd. Toyota Coroner, Honda Cervix, Suzuki Weaksauce... it doesn't really matter.

my 99 3.8 gets 25, and thats with the occasional floor, and it looks way better than any honda.

dag... when my 3.8 was kinda stock*intake, exhaust* and driving it like an a$$ everyday, i would get about 25 city and 37 highway.

Buy an import for mileage.

The 3.4L is not efficent. It was an "after thought", only proven by them putting the 3.8L in it before the model refresh.

i dont know what you other 3.4s are doing wrong i got 24mpg in my auto and i get 26-28mpg in my 5speed with some minor intake & tb porting and a test pipe.
