yes the union won the vote. but now it has to go threw alotttt of stuff. our lawers are working on it. but the union might not get in after all. but we won't know for a while.
I came in just before a strike, still on my probation so I wasn't subject to the strike. They walked out, and the facility staffed with agency and new hires they promised jobs to. Strike ended, and the facility refused to return all of the Nurses to full time status. The facility wasn't really allowed to do it, but did it anyways, and left them hanging without full time pay for two years. Most quit.(They did it to the aids too, but they were hard to come by at the time)
The next thing I noticed was that Laundry, Housekeeping, Kitchen, and Nurse Aids were all lumped together in bargaining. Which completely screwed the Aids, their pay rate was tied to the pay rate of a labor force without education or qualification. They would end up payed significantly less than other facilities because of it.
Over the next 6 years they took my Union Dues, and I saw the representative exactly twice. Several thousand out of my pay, no visits from the person representing.
I remember one occasion the facility was having problems staffing the 3-11 and 11-7 shifts, their solution? Offered a $1/hour shift differential to those shifts. The Union grieved it, that's right, they fought against it, and ultimately won. Why? Because in a Nursing Home the staff is top-heavy, Ancillary like Laundry and Housekeeping all work 7-3, being greedy they didn't want anyone else to get money. So it went to vote and got shot down, because there's approximately 21/shift staff in evenings+nights in a 120 bed facility, but 26/shift on 7-3. End result, the evening and night shifts remained short staffed to critical levels working with as much as 21 patients/aid and some days 60 patients/nurse, all because of greed and jealousy. The math on that is really scary, it works out to about 17 minutes of care per patient for an aid, and 6 minutes of care per patient for a Nurse, in an 8 hour shift. Assuming absolutely nothing unusual happens.
Which brings me to my next point. Union facilities make it incredibly difficult to get rid of staff. So a staff person can be abusive and obnoxious, and keep their job for extended periods of time if the Union fights for them. Someone's Grandparent could easily be neglected daily, and the facility can't get rid of the useless aid. I once had a Nurse's Aid who was so terrible that I summed up her first review with "Spends more time outside than a tree.", she quit a year later. Any other, every other, job she would've been fired for outright neglect. I had another Nurse Aid who would intentionally ram the food carts into patients in wheel chairs at least once a week. "I couldn't see them there around the cart", sure, so that's why you sped up and took aim. Took 6 months to fire him, and in the end it was attendance. Any other place and I could've kicked him out on the spot for blatant abuse and brought him up on charges. Union facility, my(Or another Nurse, or Aid, or Housekeeper, etc.) word against his, nothing we can do. Had yet another Aid who broke 3 legs in 12 months, couldn't do anything. A Housekeeper who would come in drunk every morning and sleep in a random closet. So many people, couldn't get rid of them.
On one, and only one, occasion did I need the union to challenge a disciplinary action. I was written up for a med error that another Nurse made. I went to my in-house rep and challenged it, the facility countered and that rep had 14 days to respond. She didn't bother. She simply decided to ignore it, and kept telling me it was "In process". When I found out, I asked the in-house Union President how I go about grieving her to the Union to get her replaced. Her response? "No. I won't let you do it, and I'll say you never brought it to her. The union doesn't need to hear our dirty laundry". Of course, I had no recourse, because there's no documentation to the contrary.
Ready for the truly sad part? I worked at the facility for 6 years. I did the math, If I had negotiated just a .25c raise per year on my own, I would've ended up making .35c more an hour than I did with the Union negotiating wages, and that doesn't take into account the money they took out in dues.
No, Unions may work in other fields, but they absolutely do not work in the medical field.Last edited by Gatt9; 03-18-2008, 05:53 PM.
