I'm not from the US, so I'm not entirely sure how things work down there, however I'm doing a Masters degree in Criminology so I like to think I know a thing or two. I've sat in court on several occasions, and one of my professors is a trial judge. What you need to do is look presentable for court. Wear decent looking clothes (i.e. no jeans and t-shirts). Don't chew gum. Shave and wash up before you go (if you're coming from work). Its the little things that help the judge develop a better opinion of you. Explain to the judge how you went to the party intending to be responsable and not drink, but since drinks were available you decided to have just a few. If he asks explain how this is not characteristic of your typical behaviour. Tell the Judge that before you decided you were going to have a drink that your girl agreed to not drink and drive you home. Just be honest, respectful and presentable and you should be fine, especially if you have no priors.

i have no criminal record, no priors. Just minor traffic offenses. Nothing serious. This is my first misdemeaner charge. I'm afraid if I don't have a lawyer to say what I want to say then I will not be given the chance to say it or I want say it "professionally" enough

do they have duty counsel in the US...basically free lawyers provided by the courthouse/gov't? If so, contact one of these guys who will help you out immensely! Be nice to them as well, as how much they like you determines how hard they are willing to push the Judge in your favor.

ok, trust me on this advice, I know what your going thru unfortunately
Get a Lawyer, tell the truth, admit to responsibility, DO COMMUNITY SERVICE BEFORE YOU GO TO TRIAL, GO TO AA BEFORE YOU GO TO TRIAL, be courteous the entire time, and importantly make a sincere effort to change your ways and contribute to the community
And if your planning on saying "but Mr. Magistrate I only had a little so it doesn't really count"
Dont bull**** them, they will bull**** you but you can't do it to them
and don't do it again, get out of the system and don't go back

Definitely dress up, and be as courtious as possible...
button up, tie if you can, and khaki/black pants...
I got 2 tickets in PalmBay(small town in FL) I came early all dressed up, came before courthouse opened(I lived 1.5 hours away) This old guy came up and was unlocking the doors to the courthouse, I gave him a hand with something.
Got into court, my cop showed up thoguth I was SOL, judge comes out...
BOOOYAAAAA!!!!!!!! was the old guy unlocking the doors... Ticket I was fighting got thrown out right away!
But that will never happened in a normal city... this city was so small same building for...

Do this and MEAN IT. Judges/Police respond well to honesty and respect. Excuses, lying, BS - they have heard it all before.
A lawyer is a double edged sword. You want to be protected legally, but you don't want to come off like you think you are innocent.

Got a question on something similar... My roommate and I are hosting a halloween party this weekend. There will be alcohol, nobody is of legal age. Say the cops show up, I don't have to let them in do I? What are my rights with the breathelyzer at the door?

Edit: I guess I could help... Keep it low key, quiet, indoors, and make sure nobody drives drunk. If they need to, let them stay. Hide parked cars if you can also.
