And on the other hand, why should she have to supply a secure space to store confiscated materials, or lose some space of her own by making room for these items?

And this is where I believe a couple of you kids are WRONG. If you break the rules their could be other consequenses. Rules are created for a REASON. First off, it is a distraction to have an IPOD on your head during class. Second, these kids and their parents signed a contract agreeing to FOLLOW the rules and NOT bring these items into the classroom And third, I cannot control what happens after hours in my room. Someone may have gone through my desk at night. So No, I will NOT pay for the god damn IPOD that shouldn't have been worn in my classroom in the first place when students know the rules. I have a SIGN that says it will be confiscated. What happens after that, is not my problem. Sorry to be harsh. But it's pure bull**** to protect kids that are breaking the rules in the first place. Did YOUR parents ever teach you anything when you were young? Or were you allowed to do whatever you damn well pleased and get away with it? If that happened to me, mine would have said "tough sh!t. We're not buying you another one!" Like I said, I felt bad. But I'm not responsible for anything that is stolen. The thief is! (Hopefully we'll find out who).
This student was a ... READ: "Repeat offender" who was given a few chances. So maybe someone (or God) was trying to teach him a lesson. Btw, I took another one away today. I Sent it to the office instead... the kid had to chase it down. I'm sure I'll see it on his head again tomorrow. Since the rules don't apply to him either.

I'm sorry, but those of you siding with the kid are complete idiots who think people should be able to break rules or the law whenever you feel like it. There's a place for people like that... it's called JAIL. :wavey:

No, school policy and the rule book required her to confiscate it. If anything, the school should have to pay for it, since it's their policy. However, I still say that the kid was full aware of the rules and policies in place at the school and that's a freakin chance he takes when he brings his Ipod to class. Lucky pricks should just be glad your school doesn't keep things till the end of the school year.

Yeah? She dealt with the kid too. The school didn't provide her any other means of storing confiscated items. Like she said, next time, it's going to the office.

If you were driving through Virginia and got pulled over by the cops for having a radar detector. Would you honestly get mad at the cops for confiscating it? You can't drive into Virginia without seeing the signs that say they're illegal.... The only one who screwed up there was the person who didn't take their radar detector out of their windsheild.

Jeeze shirl......I'm not siding with the kid, Im trying to point out what your missing...YOU took away the Ipod...YOU'RE responsible while it is in YOUR possession...If you can't 100% keep it safe then either dont take it away, give it back at the END of class, kick the kid outta class, or send it to the office OR him to the office...

Thats my first point...me SECOND point...You a highschool teacher? Ok its not like you are an elementary teacher...your dealing with young adults here...some of which are already 18...This is not time to be spoon feeding them IMO...if they dont want to sit in class and learn, nothing you do is going to make them learn...I repeat...If they do not want to learn, nothing you do is going to change that... ( you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make em drink) so I personally would warn them first, then kick them out of class and tell them to come back when they are ready to learn...

I HATE when teachers try and spoon feed you...if that kid does not want to listen, He is not going to...just because you take his Ipod away does not mean he is going to listen, it may look like hes listening...but I can assure you he's not...Hes day dreaming or sleeping on the desk guranteed. SOOO...rather then stress yourself out and put this burden on you, let it slide and just kick them out of class...these are not elementary students your dealing with here

If school policy dictates that she is to confiscate the item, then she is doing what's required of her. I hate it when teachers just "let it slide" cause it's already to late for somebody to change. It's rediculous to say that him listening to his IPod is better for the class than taking it away. He serves as a bigger freakin distraction with it playin (cause obviously he's not being very covert about it), than he does while he's daydreaming. So what if a student isn't going to try either way, that's their choice, but don't let their actions affect the whole class. If he's allowed to listen to it, then so is everybody else. And then nobody's listening. Rules are part of real life man, and if nobody is gonna show him that now (cause everybody else lets it slide) then he's gonna be the douchebag that nobody can stand to work with.

I don't "kick kids out of class". Not my style. That's like shipping them off for someone else to deal with. The office has enough work to do. I deal with ALL of the problems that occur in my classroom.

I'm not sure what your point is but a kid with an IPOD on his head is a distraction to ALL students and the teacher. Just because the kid doesn't want to learn doesn't mean he has the right to infringe on everyone else's education too.

As for it being my responsibility to keep his/her IPOD 100% safe? It's not physically posible. Things get stolen all of the time. So again, the solution: Follow the rules and don't bring it to begin with.

You kept mentioning 'spoon fed'. I didn't read your entire post, but had a point. You say they don't need to be spoon fed in High School, so, why can't this kid just follow the rules? For all we know, he IS 18. If someone can't follow simple rules of not bringing it to class, or at least keeping it hidden, they are NOT going to make it very far in life. :spank:

Did you read my whole post or just parts of it? I never said let him stay in class and listen to it...reread what I wrote...Thats what I said...at this age, its their choice if there gunna sit and learn...you think in university someone is going to sit and hold your hand and tell you to pay attention? if you do then you need a serious wake up call...And its not "Letting it slide" in the sense of your not doing anything...your kicking them out of class until they are ready to learn. I dont know about your school policy shirl...but back in my old highschool...Ipods, cell phones, mp3's etc were not allowed...but school policy never said anything about teachers confinscating them...You shouldn't HAVE to confinscate them, because if you do...then the school should be providing you with a place to put them...Teachers used to confinscate hats at our school if you were caught wearing them...No matter who took the hat, they all went to the SAME lock up in the office and you had to pay either 2 dollars to get your hat back, or do so many hours of community service...
