Re: The Most Frustrating Work Situation

Lol, I hear ya there. I guess I should share my story.

So here I am, working a 12 hour shift at a Circuit City. I've been there for around 8 hours now with no lunch break. I've been skipped twice for lunch already because management didn't schedule enough people and we're taking turns. I'm hungry, and I'm grumpy. I've been trying to go on lunch for about 2 hours now, and I'm already getting the shakes; partly from hunger, and partly from anger. Not a good time to test my patience. Anyways, I'm running the only cash wrap (checkout counter) that's open up front. I'm doing fine with every customer that comes my way, normal idle chitchat, nothing unusual. Then this guy comes up with a Kenny Chesney CD, nothing else, just a Kenny Chesney CD. It was on sale the previous week. The sale ended the night before and I guess somebody didn't change the tags or retag the case, I don't really know. He comes up expecting to get the CD for $8.99. Well, I scan it, price shows up as $12.49 (or something random like that). So I tell him, "Allright, the total's $12.49". He get's out his wallet and removes his credit card, then it hits him. I could see it in his eyes, he's like "wait a second". I'm thinkin, "Ok, maybe he'll stay calm about it, it's only a few bucks more". Well, aparantly he can't swing the extra $3.50 without being a jerk. He mentions the price difference and I told him that the sale ended the night before, and the system has already updated with the appropriate prices. I told him I couldn't make the change personally. This is where he got unreasonable. He goes off about how he runs a business, and that the customer is always right, I told him that I understood that the tag should have been pulled, but I couldn't personally do the price adjustment without a manager. I told him if he would go to the customer service counter (there wasn't even a line, and it was litterally 12 feet away), they could take care of it no problem. He tells me that it's my problem, not somebody elses, and I can't just pawn him off onto another person. I said "Well, technically it's your problem since you're the one buying the CD, now you can either go to the Customer Service counter, or I can call a manager and have them take care of it. What do you want me to do?" He said "call your manager." So, I call the manager and explain the situation, and he asks me to send him to the customer service counter. I told him how the customer wouldn't go, so he had to log into the system and do a bunch of crap. 10 minutes later, and a 15 more people waiting in line behind the guy, he saved his $3.50. He walked away shaking his head and cussing. I looked at the next guy in line and told him "Sorry, somebody else will be with you shortly, but I gaurentee it wont be me". I walked to the manager's office and told him to get somebody else up front cause I was taking lunch. Then I left for about 2 hours.

Guy's I'm 5'6" and 175lbs, I'm not a huge dude by any means, but this guy would have had a bad day. My buddy that watched this whole thing unfold said he thought I was going to kill the man. Said I was more red in the face than a coke can, and shaking like I was about to start having fits. He said "I honestly have never seen you stay that calm being that mad before."

He was one douschebag comment away from me chucking the CD to the back of the store.

Edit: Wow that was a long post.

thats a hilarious story... i probably would have either just paid the 3.50 myself, and said please don't come back... or, oh well.. one less customer in a huge store...:)

Dude, I almost asked him if he wanted me to cover the difference since $3.50 was too much for him.

haha yea i worked there too... i have an endless amount of stories, and lucky me gets to work there over the holiday season

I understand a lot of people that work for best buy/circuit city/etc.. only know what the online training teaches them, but me and a couple people in our home entertainment department actually know a lot about what were talking about and keep up with the stuff even outside of work, and i always hated a customer telling me i was wrong... i'd just walk him to the computer, and show him proof online from good sources and the customer would give me the "well thats not what my moms brothers son-in-law told me who used to be a tv repairman" :spank:

Re: The Most Frustrating Work Situation

I work in a hotel.. so my entire 8 hours is filled with annoying high maintainence people and they're ridiculous/stupid requests: Had a woman tonight who wanted to move to another room cuz there was a lady bug on the ceiling.

Got a call from a room one night.. it was like 1 in the morning (only me and the front desk manager on staff) "Yea, hi, we just got back from work and we're all sweaty and we want to take a shower, but the shower knob is broken."

Me: "Oh, i'm sorry about that, unfortunately we dont' have an engineer on staff to fix it until 7 in the morning."

Woman: "Well we've just been working all day and we need to take a shower, isn't there anything you can do?"

Me: "I'm affraid not, theres just me and fred here now, and neither of us are qualified to fix plumbing."

Woman: "Well its just that we have to be up by 8am tomorrow morning.."

Me: "Well thats fine, i can send the engineer up to fix it then or earlier if you like."

              Woman: "Fine."

5 minutes later i get a call back from the same room.

Different woman: "Hi, me and my roomate just got back from work and want to take a shower, but the shower won't work."

Me: "Yes i know, i spoke to her just now. I can send an engineer up at or before 8 to fix it so you can get to work on time."

Dif. woman: "Yea, well see we need to be up by 8 so we can get to work by 10."

Me: "Right, i can send the engineer up as early as 7."

Dif. woman: "Well we'd really like to shower now, is there prehaps another room you could move us to?"

Me: "I'm sorry, we're sold out tonight there aren't any other rooms available."

              Dif. woman: "Oh, ok"

Then 10 minutes after that a guy strolls up to the front desk.

Man: "Hi, my colleagues are upstairs and they just got back from work and would really like to take a shower, but they tell me their shower isn't working."

Me: (beginning to feel like Peter and his TPS reports in Office Space) "Yea i've spoken to them both already, we can send an engineer up to fix it in the morning."

Man: "Right, well they'd really like to shower now, is there an empty room they can just take a shower in?"

Me: "I'm affraid not, we're completely booked tonight"

Man: "You're telling me there isn't an empty room up there they can just shower in?"

Me: "Unfortunately not, like i said we're totally booked."

Man: "Look i've got 6 rooms at this hotel, i'm spending a lot of money here. Now tell me theres a room they can shower in."

Me: "I don't have a spare room sir."

Man: "So you're telling ME that i could go up there right now and knock on every single door and there would be someone in there?!?"

              Me: "Yup"

Man: "Thats bull****! Well what if they showered in my room?"

Me: "Thats fine, if they wanna do that."

He then got on the phone and talked for a bit. Turns out that these to ladies don't want to shower in this guys room, and can't (heaven forbid) shower in the morning. At that point the guy exploded and went on a tirade about how obsurd it is that we don't have an engineer on staff blah blah blah. Eventually he left, and i made a note in the little red book to have an engineer sent up in the morning.

              Random funny annecdote:
Guy walks up to the desk i ask him how his stay has been "its been great" he says with a lot of enthusiasm "only one thing.. i went to the pool but it was kinda gross"

"what do you mean" i ask

"well it had these brown chunks sitting in the bottom... like somebody took a **** in it"

"wow, thats disgusting, i'm sorry about that"

"oh its ok.. just.. i mean who takes a **** in the pool??!" and with that he chuckles and walks off. Couple minutes later the phone rings, its some person whos toilet doesn't flush. Couple minutes later, fred the night auditor comes back from break.

"hey fred, a guy stopped by the front desk.. says the pool is full of ****"

              Fred: lol

              "no literally, full of poo"

              Fred: rofl "no ****"

"oh and room 574 called down.. their toilet doesn't flush."

Fred: "oh well tell them they can use the pool then."

She was clearly angry to begin with and it probably didn't matter what you said... she was still going to give you an attitude. Oh well... that's why you just do you're job in a neutral manner and don't take things personally. Chuckling is a good way to keep your sanity. ;)

I love how comcast wants to charge me $50 to plug in a bunch of cables and set up a POP server. I told the dude I can handle it, and that I didn't need outlook configured. He looked at me confused and asked, "but how are you going to get your e-mail?". I replied, "GMail", and he had no clue WTF I was talking about. I think I can handle plugging in a few cables.
