  • Anyone Ever Run Their Convertible at the TRACK??

I was going to post this in the drag forum, but figured it would get more response in the lounge. Anyone run their 3.8 Convertible to see what it does? Now I'm wondering which one of my slow cars is faster.... the 06' Eclipse or the 02' Camaro Convertible. I *might* take the vert to the track..who knows. (I only have a whisper lid. It's a Y87). Anyone?

Camaro will be faster. Those imports are very smooth and that's why they SEEM faster but in real life they are not. They lack torque. I ran my convertible and it ran high 16s I think. But that car was a 96, 120K miles, so-so running transmission. So, I think you would run high 15s to 16s flat???

Since you have track experience, it's a Y87, there is nice cold temps now, 02's have a looser converter than older v6's.... I would expect low 15's.

The convertables aren't that much heavier - maybe 3500-3600?

Is the eclipse a 4 cyl or 6?

My Eclipse is a 4cyl. It's my everyday commuter car. I actually took it to the track on Friday night and was disappointed. It ran low 16's with a best of 16.3 @ 82mph. 2.3 60fts. I have an intake on it, underdrive pulley and a muffler (no catback or high flow cat). It's very heavy for a small car though.. around 3300 lbs. It was about 52 degrees out.

            Is it auto?

If yes - then that is to be expected.

The neon cars with manual trannies can run low 16's - auto trannies are in the low 17's and maybe dip into the high 16's

Yes, it's an auto with the sportronic shift mode. On the first two passes I used the sportronic and shifted at redline which is 6500 going through the traps in 3rd gear. On the 3rd pass I left it in drive and still went through the traps in 3rd. All three passes were very similar with the first pass being the best, so I said... eh, that' enough... it ain't gettin' any better. ;)

Re: Anyone Ever Run Their Convertible at the TRACK??

Ran my 01 camaro vert about a year ago; auto and non Y87, so 3.08's and no LSD. Weighs about 3600 lbs. I ran a 15.8 the first time with pretty worn Nitto NT450's in the back. Weather that day was about 70's I think.

I think with the better tires I have now and practice on my launching, I could definitely pull mid 15's or possibly even low 15's.
Yes, I know \"Artic\" should be spelled \"Arctic\". Can any of the mods change this?

Re: Anyone Ever Run Their Convertible at the TRACK??

02's have the losest converter - people have been able to stall the converter to 2200 rpm's at the line.

Doing that plus inflating front tire psi, free ram air etc could net low 15's

w/ the firebird (97) i could stall it to 2500... w/o spinning (when my tires were only like a month old)

i ran a 15.2 when i was bone stock. its practically the y87, but without the LSD. so i would assume that you can hit some mid-low 15's!
