wow.. I am surprised the hospitals didn't check the organ in the lab for pathologies before transplant.. Very sad, indeed! Do you have link to the real story?
They said they were tested, but there is no 100% test that can prove they are disease free...
The donor may have been introduced several months prior to dying and it didnt show up on the test in the very small percent chance the test wasnt accurate
course, if you were the recipient, and you had 6 months to live, and the heart transplant gets you 20 more years until you die from AIDS...
would it be worth it to you to accept that trade?

well, you have to think about this too...
those 20 years that you'll have before you die from AIDS means that your blood becomes a HUGE biohazard (which makes for interesting consequences should you cut yourself and have to clean up, or if you need another surgery) and also, more pressingly, you wont be able to have sex again with someone who isnt infected. If your wife is clean, barring a huge sacrefice on her part, you'll never do the nasty again. Condoms only help so much. Sooner or later she's going to get it.
20 years is a lot longer than 6 months tho.
Either way, its a tougher call than it looks at first glance...

Since the test isnt 100% it is POSSIBLE to catch AIDS a few weeks or months before you die and the test sometimes doesn't catch it. ****ty situation but they did run the test.
- Why tiptoe through life to arrive safely at death -

those are basically the points i was thinking about..
You could live 6 months, with no garuntee that you will be in any shape to live those last 6 months as you would like... in fact, you would probably be hooked to more machines, and spend mroe time in hospitals than anything.. though you would have that time to make ammends for your errors, and make peace with those that you want..
In 20 years, you could still lead a pretty productive life, albiet constantly in fear of getting someone else sick. and then there is probably a good chance that your last few years, you woudl be in the same predicament (bed ridden, in and out of hospitals, etc) And 20 years without sex.. wow.. I dont' know anyone who would sign up for that..
I'd prolly say though, that if there were no other options.. take the organ or die, id take the organ and at least prolong my life.. especially if i had kids.. i would want to be there for them, even if it meant an even more horrible end down the road..
