Maybe turn on the A/C and put some wet food at the vent he went in at? They've got a great sense of direction and would surely be able to find his way back. The blowing Cold air would probably make him want to go out quicker, and the wet food would coax him out even more.. Good luck with that..
Best thing to do, let him be for now. He won't stay in there, but your chances of getting him out are slim to none at this point. My own cat did similar things in the past, hiding in places that were almost unreachable everytime he was moved from one house to another. He WILL come out at some point, probably best to leave food out somewhere at night, BUT NOT NEAR THE VENT. Do not leave food right at the vent, let him find it. If you leave it right at the vent, he will have no reason to come out of it short of eating, and as soon as he is done eating, he will go back into the vent. Gotta keep the food some distance from the vent, best place would be in open sight in the next room if possible.
And as soon as he comes out, smash his head with a ball peen hammer, it'll keep him from going anywhere.

You guys are all stupid. The cat's done the classic misdirection trick. He took the vent grate off to distract you, then ran out the front door when you opened it :slap:
