Any one know what the speeding laws are in fl for when they can arrest you/ suspend your license? I heard that as long as you dont double the speed limit they wont arrest you.

    Re: Florida speeding laws

For suspending your license, you have to get 12 points within the last year. However, the court can suspend your license any other time they feel it is necessary.

322.27 Authority of department to suspend or revoke license.
    (a) When a licensee accumulates 12 points within a 12-month period, the period of suspension shall be for not more than 30 days.
    (d) The point system shall have as its basic element a graduated scale of points assigning relative values to convictions of the following violations:
    1. Reckless driving, willful and wanton--4 points.
    5. Unlawful speed:
    a. Not in excess of 15 miles per hour of lawful or posted speed--3 points.
    b. In excess of 15 miles per hour of lawful or posted speed--4 points.
    316.655 Penalties.
    (2) Drivers convicted of a violation of any offense prohibited by this chapter or any other law of this state regulating motor vehicles may have their driving privileges revoked or suspended by the court if the court finds such revocation or suspension warranted by the totality of the circumstances resulting in the conviction and the need to provide for the maximum safety for all persons who travel on or who are otherwise affected by the use of the highways of the state. In determining whether suspension or revocation is appropriate, the court shall consider all pertinent factors, including, but not limited to, such factors as the extent and nature of the driver's violation of this chapter, the number of persons killed or injured as the result of the driver's violation of this chapter, and the extent of any property damage resulting from the driver's violation of this chapter.

Required to go to court at 30 mph over.

318.19 Infractions requiring a mandatory hearing.
Any person cited for the infractions listed in this section shall not have the provisions of s. 318.14(2), (4), and (9) available to him or her but must appear before the designated official at the time and location of the scheduled hearing:
    (5) Any infraction of s. 316.183(2), s. 316.187, or s. 316.189 of exceeding the speed limit by 30 m.p.h. or more.

    Reckless Driving:
    316.192 Reckless driving.
(1)(a) Any person who drives any vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property is guilty of reckless driving.
    (2) Except as provided in subsection (3), any person convicted of reckless driving shall be punished:
    (a) Upon a first conviction, by imprisonment for a period of not more than 90 days or by fine of not less than $25 nor more than $500, or by both such fine and imprisonment.
This will get you arrested according to 318.17(4). There is no real definition of Reckless Driving, so it would be up to the officer. If the speed limit is 70 mph on the interstate, you will likely get arrested before 140 mph.

    Fines:
    318.18 Amount of penalties.
The penalties required for a noncriminal disposition pursuant to s. 318.14 or a criminal offense listed in s. 318.17 are as follows:
    (b) For moving violations involving unlawful speed, the fines are as follows:

For speed exceeding the limit by: Fine:
    1-5 m.p.h ............ Warning
    6-9 m.p.h ............ $25
    10-14 m.p.h ............ $100
    15-19 m.p.h ............ $125
    20-29 m.p.h ............ $150
    30 m.p.h. and above ............ $250

Fun fact of the day: it is illegal to coast downhill in neutral or with the clutch disengaged.
316.2024 Coasting prohibited.--The driver of any motor vehicle, when traveling upon a downgrade, shall not coast with the gears or transmission of such vehicle in neutral or the clutch disengaged. A violation of this section is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a moving violation as provided in chapter 318.

Why is that illegal? And how would they know if you were doing it?

In a situation where you have to be able speed up instantly to avoid an accident you would be screwed... and theres not really a way for them to know. Just one of those dumb laws that they don't enforce.

More importantly, where is there a hill in FL to do this?

It has to do with controlling your vehicle. So if your going down a hill, take it out of gear, then put it in reverse instead of 3rd or something, cause a big wreck, it's your fault.

my record for not getting tickets is 10 times pulled over. My previous record before that was 8. My current streak is 4.
