  • Changed the plugs.

Today I was up in Portland at a local car club meet, and I decided to change my plugs since i bought some AC Delco Iridiums yesterday. Anyway, after reading all the threads about how terrible changing the spark plugs is, i was not looking forward to it. Thinking I needed a lift, we had one on hand but didn't use it. I popped the hood, and had all 6 plugs changed out in less than 15 minutes, all under the hood, not using a lift or anything. That time includes gapping them and inspecting all the old plugs thoroughly for any strangeness.

Keep in mind now, I've never changed plugs on anything. I watched my dad change plugs on the old exploder when i was 6, but that's it.

Changed them out and all was well. I started home an hour later and everything was going great until i got to TV highway as it's called, and i started getting a bad misfire. The light was blinking and all. It was about 35* out and POURING down rain. I'm alone, about 75 miles from home, and no one is answering their phones. Anyway, I drive around on 5 cylinders for about an hour, trying to find an autoparts store that wasn't closed. After stopping in to Joe's and asking someone, I went to a Baxters about 8 miles away, got the code read but it wouldn't tell me which cylinder..went to buy a set of wires (assuming that's the only thing it could be considering i just did plugs) but they had none in stock. So i drive down the road another 5 miles or whatever and finally get to a Schucks. Their code reader tells me cylinder 1 and I go to buy a wire, but they only sell in packs, and i only had $26 on me, the wires cost $36. Well after some more talking and after telling them this, they decide to give me the pack for $26! I was like "Sweet!" So I go out in the freezing cold rain in jeans and a t shirt and wind breaker and swap out my cylinder 1 wire. Turns out the old wire was burned almost all the way thru.

Anyway, I was really lucky these guys were in a good mood and did that for me, and to anyone who reads the plug changing threads and thinks it's going to be hard, it's not at all.

oh btw, the change fixed the bucking in the lower rpms under load, for those of you that remember that. I was told it was a fuel filter, but that didn't do it, this did, so i'm happy.

Maybe you have toothpick arms, cuz changing plugs is not an easy task.

I think it took me about 1.5 hrs

Yeah, my arms are pretty skinny, but the only one that proved to be even a little bit difficult was #6. It wasn't too bad still though. Only took about a minute extra.

          Re: Changed the plugs.

interesting story. changing spark plugs on a 3.8 is a very feasible task yet its just a bit time consuming. The engine bay is very cramped, especially where the spark plugs are located. I still remember the first time i did a tune up on the camaro. I was 15 1/2 and it took me almost 1 1/2 hours working at a casual pace. I have very scrawny hands and i still found most of them difficult to get to from up top. When i had stock manifolds (the log ones), i found it to be easier by getting them from under the car. But now with aftermarket headers (pacesetters) there is much more room, and im sure i can get them all from up top.

Ya you must have pretty small arms! I always have problem with #5. But I do it so many times now, I put on the socket from below and go up top to wrench it off.

Moral of the story: change your plug wires at the same time. ;)

^^ No kidding didn't have the money on hand tho obviously haha.

Changed out the rest of the wires today and it was another 10-15 minutes. i have tubular manifolds, so i'm sure it's easier than the old logs, but the threads I read applied to 00-02s as well.

Its the logs that you have problems with. Headers>tubular>logs.

Heat shields and log manifolds are a PITA to deal with. If the heat shields are off, its 10x easier. But with headers, I can do it in 10 minutes. With the logs....almost 1 1/2 everytime.

                          that's why I don't mention it much.

I got the tubulars for like 30 bucks and ported them out. I may be able to get an additional 3-5hp out of some shorties, but in order to do so, i'd have to add another zero to that figure. It was a noticeable performance increase for very cheap and i don't regret it.

Yeah, the heat shields are a pain the but to remove too.

But once you get rid of your exhaust manifold with pacesetter headers it is very easy to change plugs.
