but dont you think that applies more for if youre electing a pastor or something??? not the president..
everyone is talking about putting national interests ahead of foreign ones. yes, that is a very valid point. the problem right now is that we ARE a hegemon in this world. its just how it goes. by reaping the benefits of being a superpower, we also have obligations. it is just how it goes. basic power schematics. someone who claims that we can simply disregard these international obligations is going to fubar the whole system (wow, dont think ive ever said "fubar" when discussing politics before, lol). Our reputation as a country is already on the verge of dropping to the level of saddam. go to any european country and advertise being american! for every 1 person that doesnt care, you will have 10 screaming **** at you.
yes, i agree that we need to get national interests figured out. healthcare, education, immigration, theyre all VERY important issues. none of it will matter if we keep having to send so many people over to fight.. if theres a draft, none of that will matter for me, i'll be over there. this issue needs to be RESOLVED. resolving it does not mean that we can simply say that we are withdrawing ourselves from any future international dealings.
All of the presidential candidates suck. hilary is a bloodsucking wh0re. i would die before voting for her.
definitely not the ideal group of candidates for this election, where we need someone to fix everything that bush "accomplished".
Here we go....
The benefits reaped as a superpower are ONLY reaped by the wealthy in this country. Its an uneven, disproportionate fortune that is shared in this country. The unemployed and poor do not share such benefits "reaped" by being a superpower. Within being this superpower is our problem of keeping obligations. Our foreign policy almost completely outweighs our domestic policy, has for several years now, proof of which is this war that has done nothing for either side but cost American lives and American/UN money.
I have always held a FIRM belief that seclusion to only ourselves will help in the long run. Isolationism could help this country reform a lagging manufacturing and distribution base. Outsourcing can be overcome. We as a people can focus more on our own issues, not the worlds....which brings me to McCain's dumbass comment at the republican debate. After saying that it was our JOB to eliminate such threats as Saddam and Hitler, I think someone like that need not be in office, ever. I think that comment was irresponsible. It is not our job, and has never been our job to police the world in its affairs. How any politician can believe that we should stop such things is rediculous. Should we allow them to happen if we are unprovoked? Yes. No amount of conflict is worth American lives if our freedom is not in jeopardy. We cannot be on these missions of spreading freedom across the world, if others want such freedom, they will have to earn it. And as for our reputation as a country, that should only matter to Americans. Our reputation should not be in question to anyone else, because our reputation is for our own.

I have one question to ask you all...What does it cost to be a superpower? Is it worth your father, son, or mother? Your uncle or brother? Are our international obligations worth the life of a loved one? I do not only speak of our soldiers, but common citizens of this country. Police departments are underbudgeted, schools and hospitals have no money either. But we can come up with BILLIONS of dollars to fight a war, whether it be for oil, terrorists, or spreading freedom, none of it was worth it. Its time to help ourselves, set right in America what we have needed to set right a long time ago.

Not justifying or commending the US current involvement anywhere outside the US and I do agree with your post to an extent, BUT based on history, Isolationism is not the solution.
SOME "US world police" is necessary to protect our country, as can be learned from past foreign conflicts that eventually bit us in the *** after we let them boil (WWI).
I don't think we need to be doing all the stuff we are now, resources could be going to other places to better our safety and standard of living.
Anyways, like I said before, we need a down-to-Earth president (we need a CHANGE), i'm sick of politicians.
US entry had ONE flaw. On the part of Wilson, he decided that after the sinking of the Lusitania, that Americans still should not enter the war. I would not propose that. I think that if ANYONE were to mess with the US, we shouldn't mess around. No political debate, just sweep and clear. Within out own humbleness, we MUST fulfill whatever threat we create. It was the ONLY thing Bush ever did right. Short after the WTC collapse, we attacked Afghanistan, a country KNOWN to shelter Al-Quaida operatives. This was not the problem, and I never had a problem with any of that. But Iraq? They had absolutely nothing to do with these terrorist attacks.
The US cannot be a bunch of pushovers, thats a given. You CAN be isolated and be a danger to anyone that attacks us, but you move swiftly, precisely, and accurately, not what we have done in Iraq.

I would vote for McCain, but I know he's not looking good. He is much more stricter in conservativism and won't let the military down. I'm for anything that will strenghten the military, because let's face it, these are the guys that are keeping us safe here.
I have a few things I disagree with Prs.Bush but he's a good president for keeping this country from falling into oblivion. Next to Pres. F. Rosavelt, he's a president that had way too much on his plate. Bill Clinton just simply ducked everything that came his way, Bush was more gutsy than him. Future history will judge Bush and I think will it judge him in his favor. Just like how history judged Lincoln and Kennedy. Both men were very unpopular in their era. Lincoln with the Civil War and Kennedy with the Civil Rights Act.
But I have a funny feeling the S. Hillary is going to win. Why? for one thing she's been getting all the media attention.
Well if we're going to have a Dem. we might as well have Obama. Atleast, the guy is honest about his record and where he stands instead of Hillary who goes by what public is currently feeling.
regarding people not liking americans... i lived in europe for 13 years. i just moved back 3 years ago. during that time i was faced with more people screaming sh!t at me, throwing bottles at me, smashing the windows of every "american" restaurant they could find, spray painting the most messed up stuff on walls than most people could imagine!
while i lived in rome, 4 marines got attacked by a group of italians with knives and broken bottles. (the marines were fine, the italians were hospitalized though :D)
i may be exaggerating on the 10:1 ratio... but im not lying when i say that its the vast majority.

So by telling this story, do you think that we have to fix the image we produce to the world?

I agree wholeheartedly with this and wish a president was ballsy enough to say it and mean it...
> > My Fellow Americans: As you all know, the defeat of Iraq regime has been completed. Since congress does not want to spend any more money on this war, our mission in Iraq is complete. This morning I gave the order for a complete removal of all American forces from Iraq. This action will be complete within 30 days. It is now time to begin the reckoning. Before me, I have two lists. One list contains the names of countries which have stood by our side during the Iraq conflict. This list is short. The United Kingdom, Spain , Bulgaria, Australia, and Poland are some of the countries listed there. The other list contains everyone not on the first list. Most of the world's nations are on that list. My press secretary will be distributing copies of both lists later this evening. Let me start by saying that effective immediately, foreign aid to those nations on List 2 ceases immediately and indefinitely. The money saved during the first year alone will pretty much pay for the costs of the Iraqi war. The American people are no longer going to pour money into third world Hell holes and watch those government leaders grow fat on corruption. Need help with a famine? Wrestling with an epidemic? Call France. In the future, together with Congress, I will work to redirect this money toward solving the vexing social problems we still have at home. On that note, a word to terrorist organizations. Screw with us and we will hunt you down and eliminate you and all your friends from the face of the earth. Thirsting for a gutsy country to terrorize? Try France, or maybe China. I am ordering the immediate severing of diplomatic relations with France, Germany, and Russia. Thanks for all your help, comrades. We are retiring from NATO as well. Bon chance, mes amis. I have instructed the Mayor of New York City to begin towing the many UN diplomatic vehicles located in Manhattan with more than two unpaid parking tickets to sites where those vehicles will be stripped, shreddedand crushed I don't care about whatever treaty pertains to this. You creeps have tens of thousands of unpaid tickets. Pay those tickets tomorrow or watch your precious Benzes, Beamers and limos be turned over to some of the finest chop shops in the world. I love New York. A special note to our neighbors. Canada is on List 2. Since we are likely to be seeing a lot more of each other, you folks might want to try not pissing us off for a change. Mexico is also on List 2. President Fox and his entire corrupt government really need an attitude adjustment. I will have a couple extra tank and infantry divisions sitting around. Guess where I am going to put em? Yep, border security. Oh, by the way, the United States is abrogating the NAFTA treaty - starting now. We are tired of the one-way highway. Immediately, we'll be drilling for oil in Alaska - which will take care of this country's oil needs for decades to come. If you're an environmentalist who opposes this decision, I refer you to List 2 above: pick a country and move there. They care. It is time for America to focus on its own welfare and its own citizens. Some will accuse us of isolationism. I answer them by saying, "darntootin." Nearly a century of trying to help folks live a decent life around the world has only earned us the undying enmity of just about everyone on the planet. It is time to eliminate hunger in America. It is time to eliminate homelessness in America. To the nations on List 1, a final thought. Thank you guys. We owe you and we won't forget. To the nations on List 2, a final thought: You might want to learn to speak Arabic. God bless America. Thank you and good night. If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you are reading it in English, thank a soldier.
