  • Double?

Do you double clutch? Lots of people with lots of opinions on this matter. Supposedly synchros take care of it, but I still do while down shifting.

So lets see what you all have to say.

Sometimes, but only when shifting into 7th.

I rev match downshifts. Doubleclutching is pointless unless you have a tranny issue.

            Re: Double?

Double clutching is letting out the clutch between shifts. So if I was downshifting from 3rd to 2nd: clutch in -> shift to neutral ->clutch out ->clutch in ->shift to 2nd -> clutch out.

I find it takes away all the bump from downshifting. Give it a try, it's very easy and you should notice the difference. Instead of an abrupt jerk/decelration when you let out the clutch pedal, it is a more calm slowdown.

              Re: Double?

Just rev-match on a downshift, let the synchros do the rest of the work... It will accomplish the same thing with less hassle, and will be 'jerk' free if you get the rpm's right.

Besides, if im thinking right here about "double clutching", your technique is pointless unless you rev match with the clutch out while the shifter is in nuetral, then downshift...

I had to doubleclutch the Mack truck when I was in the Army. Do you drive a Mack? If not, I don't think it makes sense.

what's it called when you are in lets say 2nd gear, and instead of just flooring it, you kick the clutch in and then floor it? isnt that called double clutching as well?

lol... i have to do this sometimes when downshifting into 2nd because my second gear syncro is messed up and it pops back out when i let out of the clutch. and i know exactly why it's a little messed up...

anyone ever powershifted? try it next time if you're feeling the need for speed. basically, run first gear all the way to redline at WOT, and shift to second without letting out of the gas. you should be able to catch second a little bit. i haven't done it in a while because my camaro is my DD and i need second gear to stay around for a while. even during hard regular shifts, it crunches a little, lol.

                          Re: Double?

only gotta double clutch an 18 wheeler if you are too slow besides if you know what you are doing you don't have to touch the clutch after starting off in first.
If you aren't driving hard you can take the car out of gear without touching the clutch and I'm not talking ripping it out either, I can make it slide out of gear just as smoothly as with the clutch, upshifting however is harder but not impossible to do without grinding the gears.

I would say its called not knowing how to drive a manual.

i guess i just explained it badly, but people do it all the time, if you have enough power you can chirp the tires in almost every gear.

say your cruisin a long, you literally kick the clutch. The rpms shoot up a little and then the clutch catches and you get a jolt of power.
