  • Question for Mr. Mercedes ... :/ Should I save this one?

I was trolling junk yards today and find nothing when I someone mentioned "this other place"... so I went there and found even more nothing... except for this one car.

I think the yard owner said it was a 1959 Mercedes .... looks like the picture below, so I'd have to agree. 220 S or so.

The car was towed into the yars about 4-5 years ago. Was previously garage kept in DC - single owner car. The yard owner's best idea as far as why the car ended up there is that the owner died and bills/storage fees were no longer being paid... so it was impounded and then ended up at the yard.

Anyway - yard owner hasn't had the heart to scrap the car, but said he'd take $1000 for it.

It looked in good condition, but I didn't get a look at the interior. Given that it's survived the rough storage conditions.. is a 1959 220 S worth saving?

If nothing else I'd pick it up, get it as clean as I possibly could, and see if I could sell it to someone else who would want to restore it. You'd be almost guaranteed to get more than $1000 I'd think

I was just talking to my Boyfriend (aka "teh Joez") ... and we're gonna go out to the yard tomorrow and see if we can see it through the fence... seeing how their closed tomorrow.

So far, I'm gonna give this girl a good home for a bit. :) (Say... while my Green car is getting a new suspension. :D )

Mercedes have a really good resale value and last nearly forever, especially the classics. So if you could restore it or even just clean it up a bit, I'm sure you get more than $1000 for it. But just in case, be sure to give it a thorough final look over before the final decision's made.

i say do it. even if you restore it in bits and pieces over the years, it will be so well worth it by the time your done with it.

As someone who is restoring a 69 camaro, I would research your purchase a little more. Those good deals aren't always such good deals. What looks like a good buy may end up costing a lot more than you think. Bring someone with you to look at the car who won't just agree with you because you most likely will overlook alot of problems. I bought my 69 camaro which was registered and the kid drove the car weekly. When I got it home and started tearing into it, I found that I needed a complete right side and left rear floor pan, a complete front and rear suspension including bushings, springs, ball joints, two body mounts needed to be repaired, new brakes, brake lines, new clutch, bigger radiator, weather stripping, the 4 speed needed to be rebuilt, not to mention all the little missing trim pieces etc. The kid I bought my car from was so clueless he was driving around on the front manual drum brakes only. The rears were not even working because the brake lines were plugged up. Needless to say, all these things and more have been fixed. I have over $25000 into my camaro including buying the car. I would say that about $4500 was strictly for performance upgrades such as my new moser 12 bolt and to upgrade my top end. Yes I spent more for performance parts rather than stock replacement parts, but there were a lot of expected cost. I'm not saying to pass on the car, just expect to spend a lot more time and cash than you originally thought to fix it up. Good luck
