  • How in the hell does software detect copyright media???

    - I recorded movies onto my DVR off HBO.
    - I plugged said DVR into my computer via S-Video.
    - Set up Media Center Live TV to accept incoming S-Video signal.
    - Hit play on the DVR, movie starts playing in Media center, thinks it's "Live TV".
    - Hit record in media center so its recording the "show".
    - Media Center asks, "Do you want to burn this show to DVD?" Yea sure, why not.
    - Sorry, cannot burn DVD, show content is copyright protected.

What? How? How does it know that? What's the difference between that, and me feeding it an S-Video signal from my video camera? How would it know the difference? Does video signal carry a copyright signal?

Yes. The copyright protection is encoded into the video composite signal and detected by the receiver. I use it along with CSS on my DVD's to prevent illegal duplication. It's not foolproof, but it's what we have to work with.

No kidding. Thanks for the quick answer, haha.

Maybe you can explain this too then?

My receiver upscales all video inputs to HDMI, so essentially I only have one HDMI cable running to my television. The other day I plug a vcr into it via composite cable and it immediatley blanks out the screen and says "This signal is copyright at this resolution." So my stereo blocked the VCR signal. Sh*t, the day prior I had a playstation composite signal run to it and that was no problem at all...

Hmm... That's kinda weird. I mean, the whole point of the upconvert to play SD video on HD. I don't know why it would want to block that.

Are you able to store the video on your computer, just not able to burn it to disc?

Right. It recorded just fine, but won't burn to a DVD.
