    Re: Nature Won

You call that a wrecked airplane? I was almost put out of a job (I'm a full time CFI) a year ago when a tornado hit my flight school. We lost a couple dozen airplanes in about 60 seconds, not to mention our maintenance hangar and administration building.

Can you count the airplanes in this pic? :)

Is it me or does that look like a pretty cheap rope to tie a plane down with. Woudln't use some steel cable or something?

I don't want to sound picky, but its a 150, not a 152...notice the two exhaust pipes. A 152 has a single larger pipe. A well maintained 150 with good service records is worth quite a bit more than $20,000. Also, while a Cessna might not look like much, the vast majority of pilots start out on 150/152s or 172s, which means this plane should garner a lot more of your respect.

Second, what is with that Mickey Mouse rope that it was tied down with? That is not even close to the grade of rope that you are supposed to use.

            :slap:
So true. As for the rope, I'm not sure if it was his or if it was "permanently" attached to the tie-down. Should have gotten a better look where the plane was originally parked. But it looked solid other than where it broke, and should have held, even in the older parts of the ramp. Most people pay for the hangar for extended parking, but this one obviously didn't. Guess he will in the future.

Needless to say the plane got off the ground a lot sooner/quicker without the 300lb instructor. Luckily, none of the instructors currently there are that heavy. I'm just starting out and trying to schedule the lessons. Basically it's my dad teaching me first in a familiar setting before taking the official and expensive lessons. Those should start out this summer when I have more time and money.
Thats awesome. Flying is one of the best things I've ever done. You'll love it. I currently hold a multi-engine commercial with my instrument rating, tail wheel, high performance and turbopropeller add ons.

But yeah, that rope isn't made for tying down aircraft at all.

I know. I hold many ratings. 63 hours in a 150/152 and 125 in 172's. :) But after owning a seminole they are pokey.

                    Matt,

**** your 152. Im going off of DCA's 152's which sell for like $3. My bad.

Yeah, flying is amazing. Up until I started driving, I had more hours traveling in a plane than in a car... But I was raised around these, both for travel and stunts. Always wanted to modify and fly some experimentals for aerobatics, but decided to take a safer route with so many accidents in the past few years. It's a dangerous route, but truly is amazing.

Aerobatics is amazing. Nothing like pulling 6 G maneuvers. Modify experimentals?

Meant to say or build and fly experimentals. One of the most amazing planes I've seen was a corporate Lear Jet that was converted to an experimental aerobatic plane. One of my dad's best friends used to fly it.
