  • Nature Won

I went to the airport earlier for a sponsor's party and meeting the local jumper's new wife when someone told us to go look at a plane outside.

Well, we looked. And this is what we saw.

It had been really windy the past few days and apparently the rope didn't hold out on the tie-down. One snapped and the plane was whipped around, causing the other two to break and the plane to flip over. All in all, it was blown about 30 feet across the pavement and will be totaled out. Last I heard the airport officials were trying to find the owner. Some student around here that was just finishing up his training hours. Sucks.

Oddly enough, the ropes all had a clean snap, but were not cut.

The front landing gear was completely ripped off and the nose cone was bent downard.

    There's the landing gear.

There was debris all along the area that the plan was dragged. All the papers and manuals inside were strewn about and part of the pilot's seat was ripped. Hopefully this guy's got full coverage.

Wow, that sucks. If you can afford a plane, you better afford the insurance!!

That's like saying "pssh.. one less V6 camaro in this world."

I think people need to think before speaking.

              More than $20,000.

Still a plane, slow as balls and has no performance at all, but still a plane.

Even if it is a lesser older model, as a student, if I just took out a loan and payed even half of that for a plane and got a call saying that it was totaled and laying upside down on the ramp, I wouldn't be happy. Especially if I only had a few hours left in training. Now, if it is properly insured, he/she can get it replaced or put it towards a better model. But everyone has to start out somewhere.

As a fellow pilot-in-training, much less with a plane that has a much higher value than that one could have been (not meaning to brag, but rather prove a point), I find it a shame. As long as it flies and serves its purpose safely, that's all that should matter.

Lol. Didn't mean to rant, but I had to agree with TealV6.

                  I didn't mean to sound like a complete *******. I completely understand. I had a similar experience but with a seminole. :)
I've had a bad experience with every 150/152 I've flown. Having a 250 pound instructor next to you makes it reallllllly uncomfortable in there. Do you/are you getting your license? Psh with Steve.. that old fogie.

The training part sucks, once you finish you wont fly much anymore, haha.

and for it being expensive, i have pretty close to 100k in student loans

Lol. Well, looking back, I got a lil dramatic. So no worries. Yeah, the 150/152s are tiny to begin with. My mom tells a story of when she took her solo flight in one. Needless to say the plane got off the ground a lot sooner/quicker without the 300lb instructor. Luckily, none of the instructors currently there are that heavy. I'm just starting out and trying to schedule the lessons. Basically it's my dad teaching me first in a familiar setting before taking the official and expensive lessons. Those should start out this summer when I have more time and money.

First of all, being a pilot, a plane is a plane. A real pilot appreciates all types of airplanes, from a C-150 to all the heavy metal flying around up there.

Second, what is with that Mickey Mouse rope that it was tied down with? That is not even close to the grade of rope that you are supposed to use.
