In the wee hours of Saturday morning, a crowd estimated at 50 strong gathered along the edge of Route 210 in Accokeek, Maryland to watch an organized though illegal drag race. As racers left the scene going north leaving behind a cloud of smoke, a white Ford Crown Victoria came from the south and drove through the crowd, killing eight and injuring numerous others. Authorities guess that the smoke and darkness concealed the group of people until it was too late for the driver of the Crown Vic, who has so far been charged with nothing (rightfully so), to react. The sedan's driver also escaped serious injury, but the incident proved fatal to the vehicle's passenger, as well as a few spectators, including a 61-year-old father.

Sadly, this horrific crash occurred some 25 miles from Maryland International Raceway, a quarter-mile drag strip. Had the competitors, who are still being sought, rented the track for their battle, all of those involved would have been spared their lives. It is a reminder that the safety measures in place at racing venues are there for everyone's benefit and protection. Public streets simply involve too many variables to control potential accidents.

yep but, just some things I heard that the media is not playing up because well "OMG STREETRACING!!!!!!!"

the driver of the Crown Vic was drunk and driving without his headlights on.


but still streetracing is dumb, especially close to a track, **** here on wed nights when the track is open I can think of 2 major street racing spots withing 15 miles of the track. I think both hve since been shut down.




Anyone else hate how they call streetracing "Drag Racing" when I tell peopel I went to the track for drag racing, some dumbasses give me a dirty look and say, aren't you worried about cops arresting you.

When guys like John Force almost die in a funny car doing 300+ mph and come back spending EVEN MORE money on safety equipment and test gear for his teams.... you have to stop and think. You can die from far less than 300+ mph in a street car.

Think before you get caught up in something dumb. See if the other driver is man enough to take it to the track... if not and you back down, your the bigger man.

That's the thing, he couldn't see it because his headlights weren't on. Both parties took chances and have to take responsibility for the consequences- drunk driver and racers. Stupidity from all sides, including the spectators. :spank:

ok so if your a spectator you know whats going on, theres no safety equiptment to protect you so you know the risks, spectator and racers are both at fault there is no innocent... down here [rgv texas] street racing is the norm twice a week sund. and wed.... gets big the weather is always perfect.

Yea Ive had the same thing before when I talk about drag racing...except ppl arent like arent you worried about cops arresting you...they just start ranting...

i knew a kid from highschool that killed a preg woman when he was street racing.she was crossing the street (in a crosswalk) and her husband was waiting on the other side when this kid hit her doing about 50mph in a 35.he just went thru the light and did not stop after he hit her.killed 2 people if you ask me (her & the baby) and he just got prob&lost his drivers lic. that is bs...... DONT STREET RACE

Not only is the track closed, but it was the middle of the night. So saying a track is close by is completely unrelated to the story. The people who were street racing were stupid, but the spectators are scraping the bottom of the gene pool for standing in the middle of a road. Same deal with the idiot driving drunk with no headlights.

Society will be just fine without pretty much everyone involved in the story.

I saw this on a local site, that guy in the crown vic was trying to be funny and creep up like a cop....be it they shouldn't have been street racing that guy is a jackass

interesting, I know where Accokeek is, Baretta factory out there, and 210 will be my comute road when I get back to the states. I guess the 45min drive to Buds Creek from there was just tooooooooo far for these idiots.
