They will probably make both formats for the 360's or it will be a addon blu-ray player like the HD drive was!!

I was waiting for this... wondered who was going to be the "beta" format. This does not mean I'm going out and buying all my 200+ DVD's over again in BR format. Another format is going to be around the corner very soon.

Companies are already working on media that will hold 200+GB.

sony sucks something awful. what doesn't make sense to me is that microsoft made hd-dvd. if you made something like that i dont think you could just drop it and buy into your competitor's technology.

Re: Blu-ray Trumps HD DVD: The Aftermath

HD DVD created their own demise. With HD DVDs you could put the HD on one side of the disc and the regular DVD quality on the other side of the disc...meaning all this time they could have been selling the same disc to both regular DVD player and HD player owners. Billions of copies of DVDs would have had both qualities and when ppl were making their choices between blu-ray and HD DVD the choice would have been obvious. But, Toshiba was too greedy and decided not to go that route to make a few extra bucks by selling the HD discs seperately and now look where that got them.

there is an upside...i'm probably going to buy an HD dvd player seeing as they're dirt cheap at the moment, they upgrade the picture quality of regular dvds, and the store where I'm going is giving away 200 bucks worth of HD DVDs for free with one.

Like Mike said if you are just looking for a upscaler HD-DVD players are going to be a great bargain. They will continue to drop in price and most are throwing in some pretty good movies for free.

The whole format war was pretty much political anyway. It just came down to who could lock down the most studios and distributors and in the last month or two blu-ray beat up on HD in getting people to only sell their format. Also, Blu-ray isn't sony. They are one member out of a list of companys that are behind the format. They take the major role in pushing the technology since they have a lot to gain from it.

They won't. There's no need. To date there's been no game released that exceeded the capacity of a single sided DVD. There's no need, the only thing that'll fill a DVD to capacity is extreme amounts of pre-rendered video with uncompressed 5.1 sound. Mind you, we're pushing 10 years of having DVD and there's still nothing that exceeds it's capacity. Nor is that going to change any time soon because graphics technology has nearly maxed, as NVidia will gladly tell you. Sure, it can get faster, but there's few if any new features.

Sony is piggybacking BR on PS3 claiming there's a need for it, there isn't, it's an excuse to get BR into homes. They don't have anything that actually requires 50gigs, it'll all easily fit in a DL DVD. They just do their best to make it look like it needs 50gigs.

Now don't get me wrong, I've got a PS3 right here so I can watch BR movies. But Sony's claim that there's a need for BR in gaming is hype.

I was waiting for this... wondered who was going to be the "beta" format. This does not mean I'm going out and buying all my 200+ DVD's over again in BR format. Another format is going to be around the corner very soon.

It's redundant. I'd recommend buying in now, none of those are likely to take off.

All of them are significant changes in medium, requiring major investments in production infrastructure, and none of them offer any benefit over BR's 50gigs.

Because they're limited by the Display, which is capped at 1080p. The only need for the greater capacity would be >1080p resolutions, which isn't going to happen any time soon, as you're already forcing the country to upgrade.

The next change in delivery will be Digital Downloads, but the extreme DRM issues will relegate it to a replacement for the Rental market. Anything people will intend to watch more than once, especially people with kids who'll watch the same movie 16 hours a day, will still be purchased on a physical medium.

That's really what the whole war was about. MS pushing Toshiba to fight so they could confuse the market, diffuse PS3's launch by making it's second best feature iffy, and keeping just enough confusion to let them get their Digital Download service off the ground so they could swoop in and steal a multi-billion dollar industry.

Exactly!! Thats why I bought my 360!! I bought my PS3 as a DVD player.. Thats the main reason why BR is beating HD.. The PS3.. Xbox is still beating the hell out of the other 2 systems in games and online play ( which is what a Game system should do), While PS3 is beating the Xbox in HD movie watching.. It all depends on what you want.. Do you want the best gaming system out there? Or do you want the below average gaming system that has a amazing dvd player??
