It takes after the super rare Mazdaspeed 3 5-door. It was AWD and could outrun the STIs. As far as I know, there are only 3 in existance, and they were all won in a contest. Correct me if I'm wrong about their existance.

Quite a bit more expensive too, and slower then previous models.
Not a wagon. Just a hatch back. It is slower straight line and more expensive, but it's better in the twisties and the interior is so much nicer then the last generation.

They were a regular production car (although a limited number compared to something like the regular 3) so their are a lot more than 3. I have no idea on exactley how many were made though. They are FWD, maybe you are thinking of the mazdaspeed6 which was awd, but had a major fwd bias.

I almost swear there was some kind of contest in which 3 AWD models were made...or they might have been converted or something...Well, with that put aside, I just learned that Mazda is putting out a 3 AWD Turbo in the near future. Whether its a myth or not, it sounds like a contender to the STI.
