i was speaking with a friend recently and he was telling me about some shot you can get for your dog to reduce their allergins. My gf is allergic to almost all animals (except me), but I'm a dog lover and want one really bad. She's even allergic to the supposed hypo-allergenic dogs like yorkies and poodles (who have something like human hair, rather than fur). Anyone have any experience with this shot?

never heard of it... I've heard of cortizone shots for humans to reduce the allergin effect. She can get medication short term or long term that will eventually make her immune to it... but I don't know about a shot for your dog.

its not in her head...she sneezes, breaks out in hives and her throat starts to swell...this happens with ALL animals, including hypo-allergenic dogs, horses, cows, rabbits, etc etc.

yeah, we were planning on doing all that and getting this shot for the dog as well. Given that she's almost deathly allergic we figured we'd pull out all the stops.

oh yeah...she's doing her masters in pysch so she'd know about that stuff. Maybe we can trick her body into believing she's not allergic! I want a weimaraner in the worst way.

PS...google weimaraner and take a look at the deer-on-doggy style picture...hilarious!

I think would depend on how bad her allergies are. I have been allergic to dogs and cats since I was 2. We did get a chihuahua and I did not have a problem. I neverheard of poodles yorkies not effecting people though.. they always bothered me. When I was 15 my mom got a cat, what we ended up doing was giving it a bath every week. Why not have her consult with her doctor.

yeah, like I said, she's pretty much deathly allergic. She can't be in the same room as a pet for more than a few minutes before its unbearable for her. We are going to look into it with a doctor and a vet before and if we get a dog, I just wanted to know if anyone on here has heard of it.

I know normaly it is the dander from the dog/cats that people are allergic to. So just bathing then can help tremendously. I know even now, if I pet a dog cat rub my faces.. my eyes get puffy. runny nose etc..

There are allergy shots, friend used to get them.. also there are alot of choices for medication to combat allergies. One might work.. when you say severe do you mean just runny nose etc.. or serious health risk.. My allergies agravate my asthma so can used to put me into a asthma attack. People also build a tollerance after a while to. yMy allergies are ALOT better now that I got older, lot of friends etc when growing up and now have pets.

she has asthma as well...and so the red blotches or hives that break out on her neck, the runny nose, her throat swelling up all combine with her asthma to make it pretty unbearable for her to tolerate animals.

don't think i haven't considered it...imagine a dog lover never being able to have a dog again.
