Alright folks ive done a bunch of reading around and ik the majority of our speedometers go up to like 120-125, but i know people have buried their speedometer and topped out at 130-140. how fast have you gone in your camaro/firebird?

unless its tuned or modded, there is a speed limiter in our cars at 118... i think it cuts off fuel to the engine from the line or something... so, thats the highest

Yeah, but how fast can they go if you remove the limiter?

I've heard anywhere between 135 and 145 without the limiter stock.

How do you remove the limiter anyway? And would you get in serious trouble if somehow a cop found out?

Re: Top speeds in 3.8 Fbodies

I've been up to 124mph but I don't reccomend it. That was all stock 5 speed 98 firebird. I never took off the limiter but maybe someone before me did

I say no mods, but I have a kn filter and flowmaster exhaust... thats it.

The only way a cop would find out is if you were speeding anyway...so I don't really think it'll matter much to the cop, but if you remove the limiter you will probably see the cost of the tickets go up a little...i mean a lot higher.

the mathmatical limits are as follows:
for a M5, 6000 rpm in top gear would put them at 197 MPH
for a A4, 6000 rpm in top gear would put the car at 212 MPH

                      Tune it out

the only way he'd find out is if he plugged a laptop tuner up to your car's PCM and looked at the data

Mods like intake/exhaust don't effect the car's absolute top speed, just how long it takes the car to reach said speed...assuming the car stays in tact that long

I went 122 once. That was enough. I don't have the limiter but there really isn't much point to taking it off.

My guess is that those theoretic top speeds are with 2.73s.

Notice the key word there. Top speed is first limited by the car's speed limiter, then by it's rev. limiter...to determine any car's theoretical top speed, one simply needs to note the speed in it's highest gear, at it's rev. limiter...hence, the 212 figure you read. Or, maybe didn't, because if you had actually read what I posted instead of fixating on the big number, I wouldn't be making this response
