GM To Pay in Coolant Repair Cases
    Detroit Free Press

    By Justin Hyde

    March 27, 2008

WASHINGTON – General Motors Corp. has agreed to pay as much as $800 each to millions of customers to settle lawsuits that it sold about 35 million vehicles with faulty coolant and engine parts.

The move announced by lawyers Wednesday would close one of the largest product-liability lawsuits faced by a U.S. automaker. GM declined to say how much it expected the settlement to cost, but the agreement gives payments to customers even if they bought the vehicles used.

The suits stem from GM's use of Dex-Cool, a coolant it first introduced in its vehicles in 1995 and sold in more than 35 million cars and trucks between 1995 and 2004. About 14 federal and state lawsuits seeking class-action status have been filed against GM over a variety of problems in V6 engines linked to Dex-Cool.

Thousands of customers have complained of problems ranging from small coolant leaks to complete radiator and engine failure. Court documents show that GM has received tens of thousands of repair requests linked to Dex-Cool and engine gaskets in the affected engines, and considered recalls for some models.

Under the settlement approved by a California judge last week, people who paid for Dex-Cool-related repairs on 3.1-, 3.4-, 3.8- or 4.3-liter V6 engines within seven years or 150,000 miles are eligible for some payment from GM. Repairs made within the first five years are eligible for up to $400, while sixth-year repairs could receive $100 and seventh-year repairs $50.

If the damage went beyond the engine's cooling systems – as many customers claimed – GM is to reimburse them up to $800. The company will also allow owners who made multiple repairs to apply for multiple repayments.

GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson said the company settled the case because the lawsuits were "time consuming and expensive." He said GM was unable to estimate how many consumers might apply for payments.

As part of the settlement, GM is to pay $18 million in lawyers' fees and expenses. The settlement covers 49 states, excluding Missouri, which has an identical settlement authorized by a different court.

Owners and customers who have paid for Dex-Cool-related repairs have until Oct. 27 to submit a claim. Further details of the settlement and instructions for applying for payments are available at www.dexcoolsettlement.com.

I wonder if I will still be eligible.... this is pretty much the reason why I got rid of my car.

2000 Camaro, died october 2007, do to an intake leak, that lead to the engine knocking, car never overheated. And jus before that had radiator failure. ****... might have not bought another GM car just to spite them for it, if this lawsuit came out sooner.

I'm not because I didn't get problem fixed within the time alllowed even though the problem was there before the time ran out.

So what if I have Dex-Cool in my car now? Do I change it out to prevent from problems down the road? Or just wait for something to go wrong?

HA, I can do this, However I havent taken the damn car to a dealer. Just a private garage that let me help take apart and put together.

GM just needs to have a RECALL on this... Thier techs can clean up the cooling system, and replace a couple gaskets and call it a day, BUT NOOOOO.. the **()()** just rather pay out a couple bucks here and there... So here I am stuck with a motor thats full of rusty mud from dexcool in my block, my radiator, my hoses, water pump, heads, and my intakes...

I wonder if we can write to GM saying this is bull, and they need to put up a recall on this.. Think it would work? How about if we kidnap thier children??? anyone want to volunteer to take care of the kids??? haha
              Kiddin.

              But its an idea..

I'm curious myself whats happening with my car.
I replaced my tensioner pulley and added some dex cool to my system. I ran my car for a week; today when i started my car, she started ticking/knocking upon startup and I got the "service engine soon" light. It seemed to do it just between 1200-1700 rpm I listened to it carefully and it didn't sound like a rod or anything really bad. I drove it around, I found no lose of power so i did one fast 0-50 run. She ran great and the light turned off.

Later today I took it out to get some grub, Started her up an the ticking continued. This time i popped the hood to listen closely... Nothing, I got back in the car an reved it up an listened some more. I heard it inside and again she seems to only make the noise between 1200 to 1700 rpms. I wonder if its due intake gaskets being gone and coolants leaking in?!? My exhaust does smell terribly odd.

Any ideas? I can't get a sound clip on here til i get the wire to extrapalate the information from my cell.

Just...WHERE DO I APPLY?????? Dex cool cost me my engine...I had the knocks and rust, as well as a rusted out radiator and eaten coolant hoses before I recieve this new engine...the old one is toast because of the initial intake failure...

I ate a bowl of fail this morning.

I'm worried about this now, I had my coolant changed at 46,000 when I bought my car, but it still has Dex-Cool in it. Should I be worried? I cannot afford to replace an intake manifold and whatnot. I'm confused on what I should do.

Pull your belt and run the car. See if the ticking went away. If it did, spray a little WD40 and some grease on your pulleys(in the back) and put the belt on and make sure its on straight.
