  • Is it rude to ask someone at work...

If they could kindly not pop their gum while sitting next to you?

I work next to a guy that comes into work, puts a stick of gum in his mouth, and literally pops and snaps it every five seconds. It's an annoyance to several people, but since I sit right next to him it gets me the worst.

It doesn't help that it's also my biggest pet peeve (popping gum). So, I ask, is it rude to politely request that he cease doing so?

Do I do it over email to not cause a scene (potentially), or do I ask him face to face at his desk, or catch him on break, what?

You pick up your monitor (or other heavy object near you at work) and say...

So, I asked the guy about popping his gum. I told him I didn't have a problem with him chewing it, but the popping and snapping kinda causes a distraction and I don't know why but it can rattle me. He apologized and thanked me for letting him know. I apologized that it bothered me, he said it wasn't a problem, that it was something I SHOULD bring to his attention.
