damn it...I just got a call there having problems...apparently the carrier I bought is wrong...its like 1.5 inches too short...they said they may be able to get it to work but I would lose abs brakes

          DA*N

now I dont know what to do...

            buy the right carrier...?

Sounds like you are trying to put a 3-series gear on a 2-series carrier

how bad is it to not have abs in the rear? I don't think my abs has ever come on in my car...the guy said that they are able to get the gears and lsd to work and the pattern is 100% but the abs reluctor ring is like a thousandth too short...so I may not have abs in the rear...realistically what problems could this pose or how bad is it?

abs in the front should still work no? isnt that the most important??

                    That's true.

I also forgot to mention that there might be a possibility of a noisy gear sound. But if they do an excellent job there shouldn't be.

they make both 2- and 3-series versions of the carrier. Maybe you should have inspected it before sending it to a shop

depends on your driving habits post-install. Most people, after getting tall gears, want to floor it between every stoplight, thus getting bad gas mileage. If one maintains good driving habits, one can expect a 2-3 MPG gain in city, and an equal loss in highway mpg

not bad, so long as you're never in a situation where you would need a properly working ABS system
I don't think my abs has ever come on in my car.
that's because it's typically for emergency braking situations. Typically, with good driving habits, it should never really come on.
..the guy said that they are able to get the gears and lsd to work and the pattern is 100% but the abs reluctor ring is like a thousandth too short
That doesn't make any sense. The ABS ring goes around the differential, so unless yours was abnormally worn out (which would be a problem with the ABS ring, not the differential like he's been saying), the height of the ABS ring does not matter.

...so I may not have abs in the rear...realistically what problems could this pose or how bad is it?
it'll be a big problem if you ever find yourself in a situation where ABS could make the difference between avoiding an accident and totalling your car

I dont know man...didnt make much sense to me either...the guy I bought the unit off of bought it from slp for a 96 camaro z28...I have a 96 3.8L...he never used it though...all he took was the paddles out of the middle...now a few years later he sold it, but he got me the paddle blocks in the middle...I just got off the phone with the guy at the shop a little bit ago and he said he will send me pics later tonight...but the unit is too short, but they were able to shim it into place and get the pattern 100%...but that abs reluctor ring is just a tad short...I have no idea

I was thinking is there any way to extend that ring? I dont know how it is connected or anything like that so Im just throwing Ideas out there hoping to strike a chord...

Doesn't mean anything, it could still be 2- or 3-series

then just tell him to use the ABS ring off of your old differential

No, they're not. Think about it logically: They're saying that you'll have no ABS if they install the ring they're trying to install now. The ring they're trying to install now is "too short" (or whatever the hell they really mean). You had ABS before sending it to the shop. Thusly, your original ABS ring is not being used a second time, otherwise none of this mess would be happening.
...smoke for a 96 how is the abs ring hooked up?
you need to get off this year categorization...what year a car was has virtually no bearing on how the rear is (3- or 4-channel, 2- or 3-series), and assuming that it will, will only get you into situations that you're currently stuck in.
Anyways, in a 3-channel rear, the ABS ring is put around the edge of the differential, where the ring gear bolts to it

is there any way to extend it?...
The ABS ring is, pretty much, a sprocket, so no...there isn't any cost-effective way to "extend" it. If the shop offers to do anything like that, they're trying to scam you.
