Yea I brought my bike as well. I had been riding quads and stuff since i was little and had ~3 years experience on a bike (rural paved roads, dirt roads, two tracks etc) so it was a breeze but fun at the same time.
If you are new to bikes, take the course, dont just go take a test and hop on a bike.

I dont know about other states, but from the sounds of it they Fcuk you on the MSF courses, Illinois is a refundable $20..
I think thats the best way they should do it, maybe if every state offered this safety course free or even more affordable that 150-250 there wouldnt be so many motorcycle deaths.
I took my course on a little dual sport yamaha (street legal dirt bike) it really was the best we had for the course it was geared low and much more maneuverable than the little shadows that most of the other folks had. I think it was like 90 or 100 if you used their bike 50 if you had your own. It varies state to state, Louisiana's was subsidized by the Louisiana Dept of ed and the local bike shops provide bikes. Anyway if you have to bring your own see if you can find a little small displacement dual sport.

First things first though, GEAR. I've got my helmet, boots, and gauntlet style gloves. My jacket is on the way right now, should be here Wednesday. I'm still deciding on pants.
After that, frame/swingarm/bar end sliders. Save my skin first, then the bike. After that, I'll look into fender eliminators and maybe a new windscreen.
