Yesterday, my wife's uncle tells me that his Honda Civic has a misfire and his regular mechanic's shop told him it would cost $350 to fix it. Last night I look at the car for him and when I opened the hood it looked like July 4th. The cap had a crack in it and the spark was shooting everywhere.
Today it took me 1 hour to replace the Cap, Rotor, Wires, and Plugs, for a grand total of $78.00. The car now runs like a champ.
He is a happy camper and his mechanic is an a-hole.
You have to look at the overhead shops have to pay for. They mark up the parts and have and hourly labor rate. That's probably the going rate to tune that car up. Yes, it sounds like allot of money to someone who can do it themselves.

Its alot of money period. Whether or not I can work on the car is irrelevant. But its the going rate, which is from what I have seen anywhere from $60-$100 an hour, not including parts. Not to mention any competent shop is going to pro-rate their work, for example, if a job is supposedly going to take 4 hours to do, and only takes 2, their still going to charge you for 4 hours. Its how shops make money.

I had a timing belt snap...the car was towed to the garage who quoted me $700...we chained the car to another, pulled it home and i did the work myself for 32 bucks. I had power steering pump failure and was quoted $900 by GM...replaced it myself for $110. I know many ppl out there are not able to do the work themselves, but it's in their best interest to find some backyard mechanic who can...otherwise they're going to get raped everytime.

...and when billy bob's craftmanship leaves you stranded on the side of the road, with your balls twisting in the wind, who are you going to turn to? Contrary to popular belief, you do pay for more than just the sum of the parts when taking a car to a shop.

That's true. However, in this case the misfire was cused by a cracked distributer cap, a $15 repair. The only reason I did the full tune up was because he asked me to.
I worked at a Mobil gas station repair shop when I was a teenanger and I saw a lot of bad stuff going on there.
Just like everything else, there are good ones and there are bad ones.
The price shops charge to repair your car are right there with what a contractor charges to do work on your house. Anyone that can do it themselves is always going to think they want too much. Anyone know the percentage retail stores mark up the stuff they sell? It's higher the 50%.

Being in the construction industry, I can assure you contractors are not getting rich charging $100 an hour. It costs some $75 just to pay for labor, depending on whether or not its union, and I wouldn't trust non-union contractors.

Both are in it to make money. Niether would be doing what they do if they didn't. If pricing work on your house, You'll find the same ( if not wider % wise) spread of pricing that you will pricing work on your car.
It's called a profit margin. In order for any business to operate efficiently it must charge a markup either on the parts they sell and/or the service they provide. It's simple economics, if you can do it cheaper, faster and more efficiently then open your own shop because apparently your that good.
Let's flip a coin. Heads I get tail, Tails I get head.
