I know 3.5% blows. It's the damn market. When I opened the account the interest was 5.05% but it's been going down lower and lower due the the crappy economy.

Besides, the HSBC account is strictly my savings. I have an IRA as well as a 401K, so by the time I retire I should hopefully have enough money to live comfortably.

If you don't sell when the market is down, you don't lose anything. All of my investments bounced back in a few years.

Re: Here is a new one for this board

I'm a low risk guy, thats why I put my money into a roth IRA. If you were to open one up at the age of 25, and sock away just $100 a month, by the time you were 60 or 65 (can't remember what the magazine said) you'd have a million dollars. However, say you wait til you're 35 to start that IRA and put in 100 a month, you'd end up with 300k, so wiating those 10 years just lost you 700k. Compounded interest is a beautiful thing. Now the difference between the roth IRA and a regular IRA is that you're taxed on the roth when you make the money, but when you withdraw it you don't pay any taxes on it, that money is yours. With the regular IRA you don't pay taxes when it gets put in, but when you withdraw you will get taxed. Frankly, I'd rather be taxed now while I have money to save, versus getting taxed when I'm old and in need of the money.

Also for the low risk guy such as myself, check out index funds. Instead of buying one particular company's stock, you buy stock for the whole market such as lumber, oil, electronics, automotives, etc. There's tons of index funds out there and they're much lower risk than invetsing into just one company. Remember, if Chevy goes out of business there's still other auto manufacturers; if McDonald's goes under there's still other resturants. When it comes to money and my future, I don't like taking risks that may not payoff.

Hmm, thanks for the reminder. I haven't looked at my stocks on Scottrade for probably 6 months now, haha.

Ok, as expected, plummeting downwards for the past 6 months. :p I guess you don't want any advice from me!

Although when I first started this for fun, I made thousands. Then life got busy, so I sold most most of my stocks for a nice chunk of change and only left a handfull to let sit and see what plays out. Like others have said, I am also not a huge gambler.

Re: Here is a new one for this board

Well, I just got started in it a week ago after finally convincing myself to. Keep in mind, with the low risk comes low-mid range profits unless that industry booms, but a profit is a profit I always say. Safest bet is always going to be real estate- always going to be people and they're always going to need a place to live. It doesn't matter if you invest in the stock market, index funds, or actually go out and buy some land, find a way to get into real estate and never look back.

If you decide to buy property for investment purposes though, don't buy a perfect house. The problem with that is you're then letting the real estate market control the value of your investment. Buy a place that has good structure but needs upgrades or some refurbishing. Best bet is to always try to start with some bare land in an area thats had good growth rate over the last few years with nice houses just starting to spring up here and there.

Care to explain why you hate Money Markets? I started looking into options trading last night. Hoping to make a couple moves.

Simple to answer, look at the different indexes and see how they have performed over the last n years.

Boring stuff that tracks the general economy and stock market. I'll probably lose everything in this economy, but that's life:

                            Vanguard Index 500
                            Vanguard Windsor

                            Kohls
Bank of America (really sucking wind right now)
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

Funny you should mention BOA. I plan on maxing my ESPP for CFC, with discount, I should be getting shares at $4.50. Once the sale comes up, they will flip to 7.51 per share and turned into BOA at $38.xx. :)

401k's FTL, they are supplemental only, not to be used as primary retirement plans.

I have money that is now being invested with Putnam, on some undisclosed funds. I have to redo them a little, I prefer high risk for the next 10-15, then start tapering it down to low risk the older I get.
