Anyone else have a dependent child about to get their permit and chompin' at th' bit to drive your F-body?
My son turns 16 in Sept. and gets his permit soon. I am not too worried, til he goes solo. Grades are good, never in trouble, can already drive the stick Camaro...

no but I was a dependent child that got an f-body as my first car, and drove my dad's 94 at the time, then later when I bought the 94 off him he got a 2k, then I drove that one occasionally. Then I bought the 2k off of him.

I ragged the every living **** out of those cars. Heck the 2k, the clutch on my 94 went out, when I was at my parents place so my dad lent me his 2k, I took it bck up to school, then obviously took it to the track as soon as I could, and later that night after the track, the slave gave out, locked up the clutch and shattered it. Car had 7,000 miles on it.

Now that I am older and wiser, I baby the shifts on his C5 (2k1, 80k miles, stock clutch) when I race it. Well except my wedding when I left the wedding with my new wife in it, I left the parking lot sideways in a cloud of smoke.

But I never had a son, so I don't know from the father's point of view.

I'm suprised he kept letting you drive his cars..

To o.p: If hes a good kid then you shouldn't be too worried about letting me drive it.. just make sure you put a fear of death in him should anything happen to it. Also if he says he's going out with friends def. don't let him drive it cuz when other peoples around to watch thats when hes most likely to do something stupid.

With me, i never really messed about in my dad's cars cuz i knew he'd kill me if something happend to them (that and he almost never let me drive them anyway). A lot of how a teenager treats a car is how mature they already are..

I agree I was immature, but I always have the feeling cars need to be "driven"

My mom was more stressed than you cause not only did I have two fieros to play with back in the day but I also had a Grand Prix GT and I loved racing( On TV!).

I never got into any trouble back then but id be a liar if I said I never raced any of my cars.:naughty: There's devices you can buy to see whats his speed while he's out and about.

I say don't worry about it. I got a '97 Firebird as my first car and babied it for a while, albeit it's totaled now but give him some sandbags for rainy or snowy weather, thats the only problem i ever had with it.

when i got my license, i was driving my dads 05 accord. I beat on that thing pretty badly. As soon as i got my fbody, i was driving the speed limit. If you respect the car, you will be safe with it.

im pretty good to my camaro... hes almost like my buddy... i won't let anybody throw anything in it (no fast food wrappers, no change, no nothing) so the interior is always clean, and i like the outside to be clean too...i drive the speed limit, and am pretty safe, but i can't say that ive never gotten on it a little bit :naughty:

                            Re: prodegy driver in V6

My parents are insurance agents, so I had the full deal to work out with them my first year of driving. Talk to your insurance agent first, a lot of companies will give a good grade discount on his insurance. Some also have a "new driver's contract". With this you sit down with him and come up with some rules and make an agreement about certain things. For example, no one was allowed to ride with me for my first year (with the exception of family), unless I got permission from my parents. I also couldn't ride with anyone that hadn't had their license for less than a year, once again based on their permission. Couple other things; no one could drive my car unless it was an emergency, no smoking allowed in the car, no talking on the phone or texting while driving, I was liable for getting pulled over for anything, etc. Basically makes him responsible for his actions and the car, while promoting mature behavior and leaving the parents to not be as stressed about a new driver.

Of course, I would always encourage a new driver to use an older car. First two years of driving solo are the 'experimental or break-in' years. That is when most smaller accidents occur or mysterious dents and blemishes find their way onto new drivers' cars.
