  • Hello ONSTAR!!

Have you guys heard about this new feature from OnStar? It's suppose to help officers stop a pursuit of a stolen GM vehicle. Well here's what the news about this:

General Motors plans to equip 1.7 million of its 2009 models with a system that allows OnStar operators to cut engine power in the car if the police request it. The system was demonstrated in Washington, D.C. today.

GM's OnStar system already contains built-in GPS tracking that would allow police to find any OnStar-equipped vehicle. With the new technology, if the police request it, an OnStar operator will inform the occupants of the vehicle and then cut power. The engine will be slowed to idle speed, to allow the driver to move to the side of the road. Brakes and other electrical functions of the vehicle will still work.

The intent of the system is to cut down on the number of police chases, which can be dangerous for both bystanders and police. A recent study showed that from 1994 through 2002, there were 2,654 crashes involving 3,965 vehicles and 3,146 fatalities during police pursuits.

The idea for this capability was showcased recently in science fiction author Greg Bear's book Quantico. In the novel, a near-future story about biotech and the war on terror, police could use Cop Block to stop a car or truck in its tracks.

"...When the truck's driver ignored his lights and siren and the trucks failed to respond to Cop Block, the patrolman became aware he might have a situation..."
All cars and trucks in the U.S. were now required to have Cop Block. A patrol car could radio a coded signal that slowed and then shut down the engine.
    (Read more about Cop Block)

GM also stated that the owner of the vehicle may opt out of the service upon request. GM's research has indicated that 95% of current OnStar subscribers would like to participate.

by 2015 the fleet average for each manufacture has to be 31.5mpg I think. If they don't meet it they pay heavy fines. If GM intends to meet this you can pretty much say goodbye to the vette and camaro, Dodge already axed the viper the challenger will follow.

I say make the cars as efficient as possible but don't require and let people get what they want.

I knew it!!!!! There's a reason for all these tracking devices. The next thing they will be doing is giving out tickets because onstar will show how fast your going. Crooks are one thing, but this will trickle down to the average person too. It's getting scary to see how controlling the government is becoming. Now they are in our cars. Big brother is watching us all.

I dont agree with you on how vettes, camaro, challenger wont make it. We have already seen back in the late 70's how new regualtions hurt performance, but look where we are today. Vettes are still going strong, camaro lived- died- and is ready to come back, challenger will make it and we will just have more MPG muscle cars. I dont think anyone thought, back in the day, there would be a time when we would see performace cars could get almost 30 MPG, and still be able to run as fast as they do. Have faith!

But I agree 100% let people get what they want.

moment of silence for Kristen's Corolla...

                    .
                    .
but yea, i had to read this book in senior english called "1984"...it was written in 1947, and it's about a government that controls it's people's lives under the name of "big brother"...they have cameras and mic's in their televisions, and anything and everything they say can get them killed at a moments notice for "thought crimes"...

maybe i'm just paranoid, but id rather not have the government controlling my ignition...if they can turn it off, they can turn it on...what if there's a mistake, and my car is switched on and unlocked in the middle of a busy parking lot?...there goes my $4/gallon gas and maybe my car...

                    there' just no need

maybe i'm too much of a conformist, but i think thats a good idea. the police are gonna stop the car anyway. if it was yours, you wouldn't want anything to happen to it would you?
