            Re: Holy gas prices!

and my gas price just jumped to $5.15 a gallon. Sure am glad the provincial government decided to tack on another bloody levy on fuel prices because gas isn't going up by itself or anything.

Petro-Canada, the worst performer among Canada's largest oil companies, said first-quarter profit rose 82% on higher oil prices and production.

Net income climbed to $1.08-billion, or $2.20 a share, from $590-million, or $1.18, a year earlier, the Calgary-based company said today in a statement published on its Web site. Revenue rose 36% to $6.62-billion.

yup, sure looks like there is no inflated oil/gas prices.

i doubt that it's going to come to ne thing. it's not like people are going to start to skip out on work cause they can't afford gas, then they get fired cause they didn't drive in. which then means they can't afford gas ne ways.

I stand by the fact that this is almost single handedly pushing us into a recession, it effects absolutly 100% of everything we do...everything you buy has to either come on a truck, plane, or boat....all use gas/oil...figure it out

                    Re: Holy gas prices!

Gas is going to go up and fluctuate no matter what anyone does. Very little of oil price is affected by supply and demand anymore, it's more based on what the us dollar does. When our dollar is strong oil is low, poor economy right now, ****ty dollar, oil is high. The thing a lot of poeple don't realize about big oil revenues is this. Most oil companies only net about 7% profit, that's signifigantly lower than pretty much any other industry out there. If they came out and said they're total revenues were 118 million and they're net profits were 7.8 million they made around 7% and people might even feel bad they made so little. Instead they make 118 billion and net 7.8 billion, guess what same 7% but a bigger number so people think they're ripping everyone off. Just simple math, they're operating a business as anyone else. My advice sit back and enjoy the ride because there's nothing anyone of us can do to affect it.

except for the fact that they keep announcing record breaking profits for oil companies...They are one of the most profitable companies out there, says so right in the damn newspapers...

Government can step in and put a cap on the price...you cant charge any more then this amount of money for this amount of time....example you cant charge more then 1.50/litre for the next 2.5 years or something like that...and if they do then they should be susceptible to Huge taxes on that money...but the government wont do **** cause they make a ton of money off of gas prices cause they have a tax on tax going on....bunch of A**holes

They are the most profitable only because of the volume they do, imagine if pepsi or coke were doing 120 billion a year in revenues. They operate at 18% profit margins almost 3 times as much and they're current revenues are only 32 billion. They record record profits because the demand is increasing worldwde, they have to continue to expand in order to meet that demand. If they just kept on doing what they did 10 years ago our gas prices would easily be $10 a gallon right now instead of $4. Don't believe everything you read and see from someone else. Do some reserach and number crunching yourself it makes more sense that way. The only way oil is going to drop at all at this point is if big oil companies are allowed to begin drilling unconvential oil, that's still a good 10 years out and that's if the tree huggers don't step in first.

Why? Why not let the free market work it out? If the net result of the high gas prices is less oil dependence, cleaner renewable fuels, no giant SUVs for single people, less clogged roads, etc, is that not a good thing?

I agree, oil prices are really hurting the economy right now, but I am not convinced gas prices should be regulated. The government should be doing something other than the worthless stimulus package to keep the economy going.

Most def. Provided that there is no collusion amongst large corps then free market is awesome. The only thing the govt should be there for is to make sure there is no collusion or unethical practices going on, otherwise game on. Look at the cell phone industry, they realize they can't get too many brand new customers anymore so they are each coming up with better deals than the other guy to try and steal they're customers away.

Some of you all need to go play that computer game called Civilization, it's a great history tool.

except cell phone companies dont have a monopoly going on...they are each there own provider...the oil companies pretty much all get there oil from a common place, its a conspiracy...I used to work at a gas station...every 5 hours or so one of the guys would go on a drive to see other ppls gas prices and call it in, and ours would be changed accordingly...they play games with each other...
