I was reading this on some site last night, that it's suppose to be based off the new G8, but since it hasnt come out chevy might get the name back in the line up. I would rather see the elky like this than with a G8 front end. The G8 front end is nice but this is better.

            http://www.pickuptruck.com/html/2011...o/future1.html

High fuel prices reducing demand for big pickups, rising fuel economy targets, and last week's Supreme Court Ruling - that the U.S. federal government must use its authority to mandate the reduction of carbon dioxide from automotive exhaust - may be the sticks that prompt General Motors to reward El Camino enthusiasts with a juicy carrot by 2011.

Given Bob Lutz's recent comments to AutoWeek, we expect a reborn El Camino would use GM's new Zeta rear-wheel-drive platform, like the 2009 Chevrolet Camaro. The Zeta architecture was created for the North American and Australian markets, where GM subsidiary Holden sells popular car-based pickups called Utes.

Holden Utes come in several configurations and flavors. Buyers have a choice of two-door (Coupe) or four-door (Crewman) cabs with V6 or V8 motors, including a high performance 350-horsepower Super Sport version.

The new El Camino would likely offer several engine choices, including V8 and V6 gasoline engines and, potentially, a four or six cylinder diesel. All engines would be mated to a standard six speed transmission. An SS badged El Camino could highlight the lineup with a V8 pushing more than 400 ponies.

Styling cues may combine the Camaro's muscular fenders and flanks with the prominent new Chevrolet family front-end that's starting to appear on bow-tie branded cars and trucks, such as the 2007 Avalanche and 2008 Malibu.

Using flexible assembly lines, GM could build El Caminos and Camaros side-by-side with other future Zeta-based cars, like the Pontiac GTO. The benefit - lower manufacturing costs for GM and potentially cheaper alternatives to full size and midsize pickups that get better mileage, emit fewer greenhouse gases, and still offer decent open bed utility for commercial and casual buyers.

according to the Holden website the base model 'ute' (same thing but the Australian version) will tow about 1600kg or about 3500 pounds...interesting. I'm looking for a truck to tow a smallish boat at the moment. Maybe I'll hold off and wait for one of these to make it's way over here.

wow... ive never heard of the holden ute... i thought all these el camino things were still just a concept... but the ute's been out since 2000 and the SS can push over 300 HP...
if only i had the money to import it... and wanted a truck...

Re: New camaro reflects new el camino

GM had the pointiac G8 Sport Truck (this is what they are calling it for now) at the dallas auto show. The regular G8 was about 40 feet away. They have basically the same front facia and similar body lines. It's not bad looking but I wonder about the interior room. A standard cab pickup will likely cost less, do more and get about the same mileage. Heck I was able to get 20+ mpg on the highway in my dad's 03 ext cab chevy with my motorcycle in the back.
At the same time I really don't want a truck and one of these my suit my purposes perfectly once I move into my house and need something to haul light loads for landscaping, occassional furniture and everything else that is made easier by having your own truck.
