    Re: Career Thread

I am an Operations Manager with a major US airline in Miami. I started at the bottom in the aviation field and worked my way up through the years. Once my reputation was out there I left the contract company that I was working for and was hired by the airlines.

I actually went to school for GM ASE Program and minored in Business. In the end the mechanics piece of it is a hobby and the aviation piece is a very fulfilling career. I would say that I earn a very good salary, but I will not post any numbers here.

Aviation is tough right now with the cost of oil so high, but we will pull through it.

I am currently working on my BBA at the University of Cincinnati and work for ashland. It's truely up to what you want to do. I know my girlfriend's dad owns his own diesel company and makes good money, as the only employee. You have to do good work though to make what he does. I hear he's the best in the business. Well anyways, you have to find what you're good at and work on it. I starte dout at Wright State doeing Mechanical engineering. I decided that wasn't right and switched to accounting. I decided that wasn't right, so I switched to finance and international business. It's all about trying things out and finding waht you like. Oh also, if you're looking for a high salary job, expect to work your butt off for many hours of the week. One of my buddys got hired on at JP morgan as an investment banker, and he was offered a salary well over 100k for someone right out of college. He couldn't cut the mustard (couldn't work 80+ hours per week) and quit 3 weeks after he got hired. now he works as a mortgage consultant for an unnamed company, making a lot less, but much happier. It's not all about the bucks, but it is about doing what you enjoy.

I have my BA in Automotive Technology and Engineering along with my Commercial pilots license. Right now I drive school bus in during the school year and during the summer months through October I crop dust. Occasionally I bring up sky divers and give air tours of the Adirondack mountains. Easy 50k a year. Eventually I'm going to get in with a major airline. My hours are there but I want more of them to be competitive.

Why do you guys not like to post how much you make? I know a lot of people dont like to and I'm not saying you have to or that I want to know but I just wonder why people do that.

Thanks for all the posts, again, it really helps.

I make 10.30 an hour, usually 40 hours a week. So that is $412 a week, but i get about 98 in taxes taken out so I'm left with usually 314ish a week. Close to 20k a year.

You can go to school for car audio etc..

That could be a very good career in the long run, A guy I used to work for went to school for it, opened up his own shop,. every couple years the place gets bigger, and bigger.

He has waiting lists, huge builds etc.

His passion is home theater but he's too busy on the car audio side of it all to do alot of home theater.

'cause there might be a slight variance between what I made and what the government thinks I made. :naughty: Let's just say I miraculously qualified for the Stimulus package (whistles suspiciously).

I was going to suggest that was the reason most people wouldn't list it but I didn't want to throw anyone under the bus.

I think the same people that brag about all the **** they get from one day to the next should feel perfectly comfortable about posting how much they make. When you buy a house, two cars, numerous consumer electronics, mods for the cars, and then DON'T post how much you make, you're a hypocrite. Im not a person that brags about the **** I buy from one minute to the next, whether it be a car, house, or anything. I prefer a more humble approach to life.

I will make $35,000 this year, $52,000 next year, and $72,000 the year after that. I will continue to make $72,000 unless the union gets a raise, or I get my bachelors and Cisco certs. I could care less what I make, honestly, I hope more people get in my field. I have insurance that is UNBEATABLE, a retirement that from what I hear, beats down most anything anyone has on this board, and pay that can let someone live decently.
