Just wondering if anyone here works for law enforcement? Police, state trooper etc. I'm thinking about becoming a state trooper in addition to what I am going to school for.

Re: Anyone here a cop?
A very good friend of mine is a cop. He loves it, but he is in a small town. He says the guys in cities have it pretty rough. The hard part for him is the rotating schedule, working weekends and holidays. He can make good coin by volunteering for overtime (construction sites, carnivals, that kind of crap).

Re: Anyone here a cop?
Depends on what you want to do. Personally, I'd never be a road deputy/cop, atleast around here. Too many guys around here that go about shooting cops for no reason other than to "assert dominance for their gang". I'm probably going to become a detention deputy for a few years while I wait for my personal trainer client list to build up. It's a great pay down here (45k your first year, 60k once you make corpral), every store down here has LEO discounts, you get out of tickets, great benefits, an incredible retirement plan. Also, if you're working as the escort deputy in the jail on a Saturday or Sunday, you do NOTHING. No court sessions to escort people to, you get paid to sit on your arse for 12 hours. And thats another plus- one week you work 5 days, the next you work 2, you just gotta deal with 12 hours shifts. Thats how things work here anyways, I'd suggest going down to your local sheriff's office or P.D. and seeing about doing a ride along with a cop if they offer it, you gotta sign a consent release though. Or tour the jail and see if you can observe a detention deputy for a day.

Re: Anyone here a cop?
FYI- if you do go to a training academy, don't try to set the record on the obstacle course. My sister's bf was a cop for a while and when he was in training there were 3 guys who were all buddies and each said they were going to set the time record. They started out great, but their finish times were barely passable. Keep in mind you gotta get pepper sprayed and tasered, neither one is fun, but the burn only lasts for a few seconds. And trust me, the pepper spray and tasers the cops use on you is a LOT stronger than what you can buy in stores. Oh, and after getting sprayed you gotta force your eyes open 3 or 5 times, can't remember the correct number.

But that's what I'd recc. doing. Go on a ride along. See what they do first have to find out if it's for you. I've often thought about doing it, and can tell you , the PD offers alot of benefits and room for advancement.
