  • 417 Miles To The Tank

Just got home from fueling up and thought I ask around what are you guys getting on the average per tank after topping it off. I just shelled out $64.00 and mindful not to run the fuel tank to fumes and affect the pump but I am just experimenting here.

3 blocks away, my local Shell gas station hit $4.19 for regular unleaded here in CT. I admit I have found myself easing off on the throttle however it's excruciatingly frustrating to drive behind another doing 55MPH just to save gas. I figured I'd pay that much since its gonna hit $5.00 by July maybe ( sarcasm ).

I also drive solo each and everyday for my daily 58 mile commute north which adds up to 106 miles round trip.

My 1996 3.8 Series II motor has been very trustworthy & reliable so therefore I'm keeping it. It currently has over 255,000 on it. I'm sure a new aftermarket exhaust, lighter components such as a aluminum driveshaft, rear seat delete and Weld Wheel Prostars in the near future will add some more mileage to the tankful. I have an MSD spark plug wire set and E3 Diamondfire spark plugs waiting at my next oil change. I have been using Royal Purple 10W30 since it came out with great benefits. I'm also happy to report I bought a 30 gallon, 155PSI max 1.5HP Husky air compressor to keep my tires properly inflated at each an every cold morning when they need it. I love it and won't change the routine maintenance I adapted so far.

I felt the need to comment early enough before summer driving hits and feel the real pain at the pump. I know we all need gasoline but Bush should've knelt before the King Saudi last November before asking for an increase in fuel production now .

Discuss your opinions, fuel saving tactics & miles per tank.

Gas here in some places is at about 3.79/gal for regular unleaded.

Hugger, that is good fuel pricing where you are.

Massachusetts, my state line neighbor, has regular unleaded fuel 30-40 cents cheaper than me. New Jersey is another state that have low fuel prices I noticed. Must be the tax formulas at work...

yeah, but in nj it is only full service. i have never let a gas station attendant fill up my car. they always spill gas on the paint.

            :dj: ..

I would probably have a fit if I had to fill up my own gas tank...that would suck big time! ... I don't even know how to use it ..

Re: 417 Miles To The Tank

i drive 46 miles each way. 95% of which is highway (about a 50 min drive) ne ways. i just put the cruse control on 65 and don't touch it. that is the speed limit. my cobalt is getting about 36 mpg. as for tricks.....i don't think that there is ne thing else to do. i just make sure to keep the up-keep of the car in perfect condition.

ahhhh i just filled up last night - $3.81 so i spent just shy of $37 bucks. that will last me 3 full commute plus about 40 miles.

I'm getting only about 19 mpg, so I get about 250miles at 1/4 tank. I use royal purple and check my tires occasionally. I don't know why my MPG is so low. I do drive mostly city though.

Gas here is 3.99/gal on average.

I drive about 60 miles Eachday half of it is stuck in city traffic driving during rush hour, the other half is highway in a rural area, i have 170,000 miles on my car, no major problems. used havoline 10W30 but now recently i used castrol GTX. i get about 315 to a tank with 2 gallons to spare.

I drove to florida in a prius and tested to see if it got better gas milage with cruise control on or off and with it off it got about 52-54 mpg and with it on it only got about 43-45. not sure if its the same with yours but you should try no cruise for a little.

My car is about the same. 18 is my norm, but I drive it like I spent a crapload in mods. :naughty:

Depends. Personally, I can do much better than cruise. For others, cruise is better. If you have good throttle position (i.e. not going up/down/up/down constantly), you can do better than cruise. Otherwise cruise is better.

Cruise attempts to maintain speed. So when you reach a hill, it gives a crapload of throttle to maintain exact speed. This is where a human can be much more efficient.

i'm gettin aroung 19 mpg, bout 310-320 to a tank...i figure that aint tooo too bad for a mid 90's extremely inefficient 6 cylinder that breathes through a straw and has gone 213,000+ miles...i try not to drive it too hard nowadays, and i've noticed a lil better average since i quit winding it up everywhere i went. i plan on gettin an intake and some new spark plugs this summer, maybe those will make a little difference...i dont even have to worry about my cruise control; it doesnt work :(
