    Blew Headgasket again?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i just swapped in a 68K 3.8L engine off a 1995. i got to test drive and run the engine while it was in the pervious vehicle...man it was straight. even did compression test.

took the blown engine in one day. swapped in engine in one day. got it running in a half a day. i was in a rush, wanted to get it on the road asap..i missed it. (sat for 6 months).

engine was cool....car was cool. bought brand new michelin sports 255 all around....
i added some pace setter headers and ypipe while the engine was out.
    hi flow cat
    and borla catback.

i then bought GtII cam and all the supporting mods within a month.

i only drove the car for 3 months! i was just getting ready to swap in the cam till......

my oil pressure started getting low below 20 sometimes. i previous did a oil change and tune up...new oil pan and gasket. new tranny seal....no LEAKS like 1500 miles ago. i checked the oil and it was good. then like 3 days later it starts leaking a little bit of oil. looked like it was coming from mail seal. so i thought id should get it fixed soon..this was yesterday. then today i drove my mom to work in the morning..watched my little bro. then went out to breakfast around nine. then my LOW OIL light came on and i pulled over to the gas station got a quart of oil.. then checked my oil cap and i see white residue that looks like.... you kno. headgasket? i smell oil sometimes...

this sucks. i have really been thinking that i should buy a new car but keep the camaro till i have extra money to fix it up all out.

been really thinking of an 04-05 Subaru STI... or an LS1 corvette.

keep in mind im a 18 year old college student (full time) and Whole Foods Employee (tfull time)

i can drop $1800 every month.

    what do you guys think?

If you can afford an LS1 corvette I wouldnt even bother with the car you have now. When you did the engine swap you pretty much told yourself that you were going to be in a world of repairs. Your car is just going to be problem after problem. I would trade it in or sell it and get the corvette. Swaps can make or break a car IMO.

Vette hands down; you can get them used for pretty cheap. My Aunt went and bought one, brand new for $40K, traded it in a month later for $26K :(

Welcome to what my world was...

I know how the world of slapping motors in can get. It sucks as a DD.

Skip the vette, you might be able to "afford" one of those $20-25k ones, but it will be older and have routine maintenance(not even repairs, just maintenance) And its not a cheap car to maintain. My dad has one and its crazy to hear about it.

Look at what a set of tires costs
Look at what it costs to do a clutch
Look at what it costs to have headlights fixed.

My suggestion trade your car in and buy something newer, reliable, even if its not as fun, and save for a toy on the side. Or if you mush get a newer nicer car.

Whatever you do, just don't end up car poor. If a $2k motor swap is going to hurt your finances, I don't think you should be trying to get an STi or Vette... maybe get a Wrx do some bolt ons. Or a used GTO.

I was in the situation, and I think around 4am I had an epiphany as my knuckles were bleeding and I was thanking god that I have a cammed 92 5.0 with no AC so I can at least get to work the next day at 7am as I worked on my broken Camaro, that yeah.... a nice reliable car for a DD, and a toy on the side is the way to go.

If you blew a headgasket there would be coolant leaking everywhere (you can see it and smell it) and your car would be overheating.

I dont think you blew a headgasket. If your rear main seal is leaking, its a $5 seal and some wrench turning to fix it. Hell, even IF it is a a headgasket, thats even easier to fix! lol They only cost $34 for a FelPro OEM replacement gasket.

And I agree with DAS BOOT and 3.4Slowtogo, if you do get a new car, get something more economical and cheaper while you are still in college.

yea. all u guys have a point.

im usually a patient guy...but not this time. i could have replaced the headgasket while the engine was out waited up for cam setup...painted the engine. replaced what i could of. but rushing fukced me over.

im sure its a headgasket....white smoke at start up. white residue on cap. coolant missing havent noticed a leak tho. milky oil....all bad.

i have a lot of time and thinking to do. but man a sti with a bov on a cold night is soo omfg....

Sounds more like a blown piston ring to me. But that wouldnt explain missing coolant.

Headgaskets are VERY noticeable when they leak. Can you smell it when the car is running? Open your hood while the car is running and take a wiff, it should smell like spiced rum. Plus, if you are missing that much oil from a headgasket, you should also be able to see/smell burning oil on the side of the block.

Im not saying its not a headgasket, but from what you are saying its just not adding up. Either way, if you do get rid of it for something else...get a nice, economical DD that is good gas mileage, easy to maintain and fun to drive while in college. Just my .02

yea haha im sure its a headgasket haha. blew the other one on my previous engine. same damn experience. and yes i can smell it. plus smoke everywhere! the 3.8l is jus not my engine...it owns me as much as i take care of it. now i have 2 blown 3.8s jus sitting. i need to move on haha. maybe in the future ill swap in a nice ls2 for it.

my camaros a b!tch..nice body and whatnot but acts like a b!tch to me. cant handle it. i jus cant deal with all this rt now...definitely need something reliable.
