  • Targa Top Ideaaaa

Okay well I know Andy and bone were talking about this in another thread about 3 - 4 months ago.

So I've been thinking that if you cut the bar in the middle (As shown in the pic, Tom RS i hope you don't mind I used you car):

If you cut the bar, left the lip and for times sake we'll say it's a hardtop. Leave the top in one piece or able to bondo it back together. Use ttop locks on the sides and use the ttop pillars fab up a headliner for both the targa top and the roof. Would it not work?

(Sorry if my thoughts seem scattered)

it's deffinately do-able, but the frame would probably do some very funky twisting w/o subframe connectors.

seems to me the most straight-forward plan would be for a hardtop car.
-cut off the skin and side rails
    -chop out the T-bar
-fabricate some sort of frame/support for the skin and side rails to function as one piece
    -fabricate locking devices
    -use the hardtop headliner...

to do it on a Ttop car, it would probably be a little more involved, just because you wouldnt have the existing roof skin and side rails to build on.

I found a cardomain that had it done to their camaro. He also wrote a tut on it. I've been wanting to do this to mine; similar to t-tops, but would set my car apart.

i remember years ago reading about some guy who did it to his camaro. and the frame was twisting like a mofo. you would need ALOT of suspenion done. alot of fab work, etc. tons of buck.

Yes, yes, yes. When we cut the targa on the Cavalier, we could hardly open the doors.

Don't y'all think a sub frame connector would work? That's basically what we built for the Cavi and it was just the trick.

whistler did it. Worked fine. I belive he did subframes and had not structural issues...

Thing is though, it was ALOT, of work. He even said himself too much work, if you are just a novice who thinks you are good cuz you did a T-top conversion, I wouldn't attempt it without someone with soe decent body work experience.

                          Re: Targa Top Ideaaaa

Subframes stiffen the crap out of the car.

I mean, look at the convertible LS1's.

Beefier lower frame stock from the factory, and it doesn't twist even with 315 hp.

Our cars WITH subframes are alot beefier than stock convertible frames, and most of us aren't ever going to touch 315 N/A power....
