  • New job... if I shave my goatee

So I've been out of work for a while now since the shop I worked at closed in Feb. I have been a mechanic for about 5 years. First at a Pontiac dealership, then at a performance shop (that closed :/ ). When the shop closed I decided that I didn't want to be a mechanic anymore and would go back to school and finish my education. Now I start school at UNF on the 25th, but I have yet to find part time work anywhere. I've applied to every parts store in Jacksonville. They all have signs in the window saying they're hiring, but I haven't recieved so much as a call back from ANY of them. I would think a mechanic would be a good asset to have at a parts store, because lately it gets almost funny when I'm trying to find parts around here because nobody knows a thing about the parts they're selling. I don't know, maybe I'm just not dumb enough to work at there??

Anyway, I went by a Discount Tire store today to ask if they were hiring. There I ran into two buddies of mine from high school that worked there. They both put in a word for me and when the manager saw my resume he was pretty much ready to hire me on the spot. Under one condition: my goatee had to go. Evidently it's some kind of corporate thing. I've had this thing since I was in 9th grade! I mean seriously, I haven't seen my chin in nearly 12 years. I just don't know if I can let it go! lol

So what do you think? Should the goat go or should I look for work elsewhere?

I have a beard, started out as a goatee so I can relate to you. I love having a beard, but if it was the choice of facial hair or getting hired, I'd tell the guy give me 15 minutes to say good bye to my hair and go buy a razor and some shaving cream. Your facial hair can't pay you. If it ever does though, tell me how you pulled that off.

      Well, I could...... .......nevermind.

And speaking of pay, it can't be much. I don't know, maybe $10/hour?? I mean this is just a part time job. I wouldn't think twice about it if it was a full time career we're talking about.

screw it. I go from babyfaced, to goatee, to beard on and off just for fun and switch things up. Its not that bad.

I'm surprised pontiac wasn't that way. Most corps you come across will be like that so you might as well get used to it now. Hell I was planning on getting a lot of tats on my forearms so I knew that meant long sleeves automatically so I got a bunch long sleeve shirts, ditched the short sleeves and then ran out of money for the tats, god damn florida and 100+ days. Make sure your going to be there for a while to justify it if your that attached to it.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. It's just hair.

Actually I'm pretty sure they wouldn't let me grow it back. After he told me that, I thought back and I've never seen anyone with a beard or goatee working at any discount tire. What's kinda weird about the policy is that they WILL let you grow a 'stache, but nothing more than that. Maybe I'll just have myself a pedo-stache. :)

Really the only other thing that's holding me back from this job is that it's not something I want to do. I mean who the hell would really want to mount and balance tires all day. I don't really know what they're willing to pay right now either. If they say they'll give me something like $15/hour, then the goat is gone in a heartbeat, but I seriously doubt I'll see more than $9 or $10 to start.

This should be a no brainer.... EVERY single employer has their own grooming rules ... I usually rock this scuffy look everyday ;) ... Girls love it!

well you get great discounts on tires, and you can change your tires on your car whenever you want

i would say its good to me

plus its an easy job, a monkey could be trained to change tires

This is true, but I really feel like I'm taking a big step back from ASE certified auto mechanic to tire changer. It's like having a master's degree in finance and working a cash register at Target, isn't it?

You said you didn't want to be a mechanic anymore, right?

What are you studying in school?
