to clear up a few things in this thread, higher octane gas will give you better fuel mileage, NOT enough to save you any money over the cheaper stuff though
also, its not as easy to run low octane gas with carb/distrib engines, you will have to retard the timing so far that you will need to open up your primary throttle plates, because of the lowered RPM, this will start to dump fuel into the engine because you will have to be passed the transfer slots, and you will be running rich.
the only way to be able to run lower octane gas than that it calls for is if you have a cam with high duration, computer controlled engine, changing to aluminum heads.. now this is doing it the right way, but just adding my .02
