  • Loss of a friend... Possibly two

Friday night, two of my friends were riding their ATV's at a hot local riding spot, it's private property, owned by some investor that lives in some other state, but the local city police enforce it. It's sand pits, hillclimbs, all sorts of riding terrain.

Ive ridden there once, but seems everytime my fellow atv riders go riding there the cops show up and ask everyone to leave. They are pretty nice about it, I think they may have issued tickets before but its more of running people out.

Friday night the police showed up, my two friends apparantly thought the best idea would be to hide out in the woods section, which isnt accessable by car until the police left.

When they thought the coast was clear, they pulled out of the woods and proceeded to head back to the truck and load up to leave, when a cop car comes at them, rams the atv'ers with his police car.

One of them died on the scene from blunt force trauma, he fell off, was run over by the police car and killed, the other is in critical condition in the hospital.

He broke his pelvis, collar bone, several ribs and his leg and ankle. As of right now he's looking like he's going to be okay, but he's still in pretty bad shape. He's completley out of it, and has no idea that his best friend is dead.

The police officer is suspended as of right now, but they arent releasing his information. (Nobody knows what cop it is)

    ---

I understand that they were breaking the law, me and some of my friends were debating this last night... and some people say, How can you fault the cop for doing his job?

But I don't think a No Trespassing ticket, or improper use of an atv ticket is worth someones life. End of story.

Im sure there will be a lawsuit fairly soon.

    R.I.P.

unless they were runing there is no reason for a cop to use that much force.

I think theres no reason for a cop to use that much force on someone even if they were running.

I think safety of peoples lives fall into play with why high speed pursuits in alot of places arent happening anymore with police.

Like I said, for what they were doing, trespassing... isnt worth someones life..

I don't think the cop was doing his job by ramming the ATV'ers. That just seems like excessive force. I hope your other friend is okay from this and I am sorry to hear about your other friend dying.

I agree with you. Tresspassing shouldn't be punishable by death, therefore that type of force shouldn't have been used. Then again, we all know the cop didn't blast into them with the intention of running them down im sure.

Out of curiousity, who saw this all go down? Is this all the cops story?

is it possible the cruiser was driving and your friends didnt know about it and ran in front of the cruiser?

Police officers are trained very well. I cant picture a police officer ramming a atv with people on it. a cruiser is much faster than an atv, and if the officer feels that it is getting too dangerous, he'll/ she'll back off from the chase, because life is more important than a ticket or jail. I kills me to see people go after law enforcment officals for accidents. we had a swat member in lima ohio shoot a woman and a finger or 2 off a child that she was holding during a drug raid. intel stated that only the dealers were in the house and were dangerous. when she popped out the door in the dark, he opened fire. now after jessie jackson said his speech, and it all went to court, the swat member was found not guilty, but he then retired from his position.

But I think that (NOT ALL) officers make bad choices, however I still cant picture an officer ramming a couple kids on an ATV and continuing to run your friend over.

I feel for your friends and family, But I think the officer didnt relize they were there to begin with.

                        Just a suggestion.

Rather than trying to assign blame, can we try to focus on the fact that at least one life was taken before its time. It is too easy to get insensitive behind a computer screen.
Just trying to stay respectful to those who are grieving.

That is very sad; how much you want to bet the cop will get away with it.

get away with what? cops dont run people down on purpose.

Lets put you in the driver seat and you run someone over.. you didnt mean to, but does that mean you should go to prison?

I would say my prayers are with your friends and family, but Im not a believer, but my regards to your friends and their families as well as the officer's family.....

but until more information is given, let your friends and their families know they have our best wishes..
