  • Windows Vista Home premium vs Vista Ultimate

I'm going to buy a new laptop today at Best Buy and they're offering an upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Vista Ultimate for $70. Is it worth the extra $70?

Guess it might help to include:

This is the laptop I'll be getting (for $549):

I'll be using it mostly for school work and net surfing. Some games but nothing hardcore.

Laptop seems decent enough for the price. You are definitely going to need the 3GB of RAM to run Vista Ultimate, but I would suggest upgrading to 4GB.

The free upgrade to Ultimate wouldn't be bad, but if you are just running games and basic usage, there really is no need to upgrade, as Ultimate just needs more memory to run the unused utilities.

I would suggest leaving the Vista premium on it, but that is just my 2 cents.

Good luck with the purchase though.

There really isnt much difference between the 2 OS's if your only using it for school and the net. Mine came with 32bit HomePremium and I upgraded to 64bit Ultamite. I did all this with only 1GB ram and they were almost ideantical. Ultmite had alotmore security features (which I dont use, I have Kaspersky) and it was slower, untill I upgraded to 3GB ram, now its fine. If you have an independent antivirus and internet security program then you are much better off with Home Premium.

honestly man...I heard vista is ****....if you can avoid getting I would....I also heard that vista contiually checks if you are running any counterfeit software i.e games, or programs, w.e....and if it detects that you are it shuts that program down....just a heads up if you didnt already know....as for the difference between the two, I am not sure...but everyone I know that has vista complains about it....just my .02

After reading through the differences between the two, I'm sticking with the premium version. Ultimate clearly offers alot more, but it's stuff that I just don't think I'd use with this PC. Thanks for the input guys. Going to pick up the PC now.

I work in the IT field and I use Home Premium on my personal PC's. There isn't a great enough perk to make me want to pay for Ultimate

I'll stick with XP. Built a computer through Dell (not too bad) and got it marked down $600 through the university. $2200 computer for $1600 with all the possible upgrades available for that model. Took it about a year before it was outdated on the market. So not too bad.

As far as the pirate programs, "people I know" have never had any problems with them, on Home Premium and Ultamite! ;)

You cant buy a new computer with windows XP anymore, i believe all the major computer companies stopped shipping it preinstalled in June. Either Vista or Ubuntu...

Linux is also a very sophisticated OS, one of my friends runs it and it is very interesting to toy with!
