      you sure?

they are straight cut gears, which are usually stronger than helical cut gears

regardless, its not good for them. my neighbor did a reverse burnout in his 3.8 mustang ( M5 ) and blew his trans.

well i really dont know, you have to be an idiot to purposely do a burnout in reverse

Well said; is that even possible though? I don't think you can get at a high enough speed to do a reverse burnout.

hitting boost in reverse is fun too.. haha

after you drive a forklift for a few years you get pretty good in reverse haha!

most reverse gears are roughly the same size as 1st.

the escort i had for the winter did almost 30 in reverse. i used to go WOT in revese and whip it around. that poor car got the crap beat out of it ALL day long everyday. i used to do 25 or so backwards, drop it in drive, pull the e-brake up and do insane burnouts, crossing parking lots ect. reverse donuts were hard, it kinda spun the tires too much and id get half way around and the tires would be roasting.

I've always had the impression that because there is a lot more surface area on helical gears than straights, that's what makes helical gears the stronger one and why on both autos and manuals, reverse is a straight cut because it doesn't see the kind of torque values as the forward gears, which are usually helical.

it should see the same amount of torque that first gear does since they are being engaged at roughly the same rpm

take a look at some of the strongest transmissions, and racing transmissions they will almost always be straight cut gears.. the only reason for helical was to keep noise down

take for instance, the m22 vs. the t56, or the t5

the gear itself isnt what makes it strong, its the way the gear is engaged (i guess thats how to word it)

i cant seem to think of why reverse would be straight cut.. since most straight cut gears cost more to produce

and to Leonard 3.8L, its not speed that causes burnouts, its the power that breaks loose the tires.. something has to spin or something is going to snap

yep, its geared low so theres alot of tq going to a gear thats not meant to be spun fast/suddenly like that. its not good. i would never do a reverse burnout in any car i cared about.

You got a good point (sun assemblies, etc.). All in all, considering that my car is my transportation (tire cost, trans work cost, etc.), I keep out of spinning the meats (either direction) as much as possible. Racecar's another story altogether (only forward still).

wow, this turned out a little different than i thought. this thread, meant mostly as a joke, turned into an information fest...interesting affect a strange, and ridiculous concept has on people

ehh... I used to hit reverse hard a few times in my 94 on the first tranny I killed... yeah like a month after dumping the clutch pretty hard in reverse, I lost the ability to put the car in reverse.

                                It sucked.

now autos, they can take more abuse, I used to get up to like 35-40 in my 85 camaro in reverse, throw the wheel, put it in neutral redline it, then slam it into drive worked *** and tore the **** out of the car...

then my tranny started dieing like 6 monts later.
