PHOENIX -- A 6-week-old baby has died from injuries suffered when the driver of a car in which she was riding lost control while street racing and struck a tree and power pole, police say.

The baby was rushed to the hospital Saturday night in critical condition.

Investigators said Chance Reed, 24, was driving with the baby restrained in a car seat.

Police said Chance was racing with the driver of a Tahoe/Suburban-style vehicle on McDowell Road when Chance lost control of his car near 62nd Avenue and crossed the eastbound traffic lanes.

Chance and the infant were ejected.

Police said the driver is an acquaintance of the baby's mother.

The male passenger in the Tahoe was described as Hispanic and wearing a ball cap on backwards. People with information about the vehicle or passenger are asked to call the Phoenix Police Department Violent Crimes Bureau desk at 602 262-6141.

Police said the criminal investigation by Phoenix Police Department Vehicular Crimes Unit detectives is ongoing.

I just hope that the mother of the baby has the opportunity to pull the plug. She'll make the right decision.

Unbe%&*#inlievable. How was the child ejected if she was in a car seat? Obviously not used correctly (surprise surprise).

its better if he lives...that way he can spend every day of the rest of his life thinking about what a moron he was. That's more of a punishment than dying.

Not that it really matters much, but that wasn't the baby's dad. It says the person driving was just an aquaintance of the mother.

around here there was a mom, who was a school bus driver, that got arrested for streetracing her own 13 year old son, after they crashed.

One of them was driving a stolen car.

Great role model... Race against your own 13 year old son in a stolen car.

Re: Baby Dies In Street Racing Crash

There have been times were I get on it with my child in the car. There are some times were I spin off the line at a red light and my daughter just sits there and starts to laugh. Does that make me a bad parent?? I do about 10 over the speed limit when I drive with or without my kid but then I see people who speed past me with 3-4 kids in there mini van.. There are alot more kids who die in car crashes because there parents are speeding or there parents just get into a accident. Does that make them bad parents?? I am not saying it is okay to street race all I am saying is that I drive a Trans am and there are certin times were I want to romp on the gas through a gear or off the line. If that makes me a bad parent then oh well.. My dad did the same to me when I was young. We would be sitting at a light and then he would floor it in his Dodge Charger and spin through 1st gear..

there is a difference popping your tires at a light, and going on high speed races with another vehical...

One time I saw this black Jetta swerving in and out of traffic, driving like a maniac in the city... we both stop at the same stoplight... I look over and see this 22-25 year old young chick and her 1-2 year old son in the child seat in the back along with "baby on board" sticker in the rear hatch... I was so disgusted with her, I rolled my tinted windows up so that I don't have to see her face ....
