  • feel like I've been discriminated against....

Ok, so I pop into the LCBO today after class to grab two 6-packs of beer....I'm with two buddies underage. I get to the front to purchase my liquer and present my I.D....I get denied because I am with 2 minors....lady then rudely tells me that I must move and leave the store because she has "customers to serve." (in a rude tone) So, I'm like, yeah, I don't think so....I wanna speak to the store manager please. Guy comes out and says uh, yea you have to leave this store right now...we can't serve you. Im like why not? There response is because I am with two friends that are minors and I am probably going to share my liquer with them and therefore they cannot sell to me. I kindly replied no, this is for me, hence why I am buying it. They continue to tell me that these are my buddies and that I intend on sharing it....

To me this is age discrimination...I am 20years old, drinking age is 19 here....What is the difference if these guys were with there parents when there parents bought booze....there parents would be ushered right through and on there way without question....but because I am young (legal but young) I am discriminated against and told I can't buy booze and have to leave the premises because I "might" share my booze???

If I so decided to "share my booze" that is not there problem anyways...it would be my problem when I face a $1200 fine if caught....there was no mention at anytime this was to be shared...I was in there trying to buy for myself...

Im so rattled...I told the guy that I was not leaving until I got his name and the phone # to head office....I intend on launching a complaint not only about the discrimination I just got, but the poor customer service and the way they handled everything. The guy was idiot, and had no respect. They treated us like we were nobodies....

tell me...is that not discrimination, or am I the only one that thinks this? you assume I am going to do something because I am young....

ok, first off, chill. Complain to the chain office, do it to a VP if you can find the addy, and make the letter so nice, the VP will cringe at the thought of lossing a loyal customer. WHile that's happeneing, spend your survival funds at another retailer.

LCBO is governement run...its the only store other then the "beer store" which only sells beer. The LCBO is the only store authorized to sell liquer here in Ontario...believe me I would take my buisness elsewhere, except I don't have much of a choice....

well, first of all, you shouldnt have brought them in with you

second, the store owners have the right to deny anyone service for any reason..

although i dont agree what they did to you, IMO i think they did the right thing.

i disagree...I see that as discrimination....there is a reason why it is illegal to refuse people on the basis of skin colour/religion etc....they need to have a valid reason...I see this as age discrimination because tons of older adults i.e 30's 40's go into the liquer store with 15-16 year old kids or younger....they are never questioned or given a hard time (atleast as far as I have seen, and I have been plenty of times)
explain to me how a 40 year old buying liquer with their son/daughter present, is any different from me being in there with these guys. What makes you think that adults and parents don't buy liquer for their kids? They are equally as likely to share as what I am...what happened to equality?

because they are older and are a LOT less likely to give their children alcohol than some teen with his friends buying it

exactly...age discrimination. Because they are older, that is all.

There is no solid evidence out there that proves or states that adults are less likely to give children alchol, that is just an assumption.

I know several adults in there 30's-60's that buy booze for their kids, and their kids friends....In fact, I know more "older" adults that do it then people my age....

on a side note, Im not trying to be a ****, I'm just defending my stance here....

neither am i, im not going against you.. i think it was a ****ty thing to do to you, but i also think it was the right thing to do.

put yourself in their shoes though.. what if a group of teens walked in to your store to buy liquor, only one of them was of age, and the rest underage.. if you are in the right state of mind, i guarantee you that you would hesitate on selling it to them.. what if that person did infact give it to his friends, they got drunk, drove around and killed a family.. not only would you feel responsible for that, they will find out how the kids got the alcohol

crazy canadians.... lol j/k... being tabc certified here in the states, it basicly says that if you feel uncomfortable selling to someone or if you think that there is a chance that they are going to contribute to minors, then turn down the sell....

basicly, leave your underage friends at home or in the car next time you want to make a purchase....

No one brought driving into the equation...the store is located downtown, there is no parking lot, infact, the easiest way to access this is by the train as it is located right infront of the entrance....
That statement can be true about anyone you sell alchol to. Anyone sold to can go drink and be irresponsible. As a sales person there you have absolulty no control over what happens outside of the liquer store. You sold legally to an of age person...if I gave away liquer to a friend and something happened, authorities would fine me for supplying underage minors.

The liquer store has no power over what I or anyone for that matter does off property....

If that is what they are worried about then they should be in a different profession...whats to say they don't sell a mickey of crown royal to Joe blow, he downs the whole bottle at home, goes out for a drive and gets in an accident killing someone....you were the one that sold to him so yea you feel like crap maybe, but its out of your hands.

what if that person did infact give it to his friends, they got drunk, drove around and killed a family..
If that is what you are worried about, then everyone should be denied liquer...irresponsibility is not limited by age....

In AZ, I know that if you go in and buy alcohol everyone who is with you has to be 21 unless it is a parent with kids. Next time keep them in the car while you buy alcohol. I found this out when I had my girlfriends brother with me who was 20 and they wouldn't let me buy it. So I went across the street and had him stay in the car then bought the alcohol. No problem, lesson learned.

Ha, I have plenty of friends who's parents buy them alcohol all the time; I go over to their houses, and the parents ask me if I want any! I think that was wrong of him to do; if you go out and give it to them, it's on you, not him. I've gone into the store with some friends and they've bought without the owner even looking at me weirdly, and I'm 19......
