So I had to replace my wiper blades the other day. Just purchased the car a few months ago, and never had to use the wipers until we had a nice downpour. Needless to say, the old wipers didn't work, they just spread some of the water around to different areas of the windshield.
So, I grab some change from my car, run into Wal-Mart and grab the cheapest set I could find. First Mistake!!!
Get the new wipers installed, and sure enough, they work great on the top of the windshield, but not the bottom. So I jumped back out, rigged them a little, and viola...now they at least clear half of the bottom away.
Jump back on the highway heading to work, and hear a loud crack...I just about sh*t myself. I can now hear the metal wiper arm scraping the glass on the passenger side.
Pulled over to the side of the highway, in the middle of the rain, and checked the wiper arm. Sure enough, the blade was gone...somewhere in the middle of the highway. Now, since this was the passenger side, which I don't really need to see out of, I wrapped the arm with a rag and took off for work.
Marveling at my genius for using the rag, I start to take the exit off the highway to my work, and crack...there goes the driver’s side blade. Luckily, the blade didn't fly off to the great unknown, it got caught in my spoiler.
Got out, tried to get the blade back on, but the plastic clip was gone. Since I only have a few blocks to my work, I turned the wipers off. Apparently, God had saved the last of the rain for those few blocks. Couldn't see a damn thing from any window of the car. So I pull over to see if it will clear up.
Waited about 10 minutes, and sure enough, the rain starts to lighten up. Driving slowly, I turn into the parking lot of my work, park, get out, and inspect the windshield for any damage. The passenger side now has a small pit where the wiper arm smacked the glass. The driver’s side wiper arm has been bent, but I am now sure how that happened.
So, lesson learned...$6/set wiper blades from Wal-Mart could cost you over $75 in repairs. Going out this afternoon to find some better ones.
