  • Japan Bombs Hawaii

December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation, and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our secretary of state a formal reply to a recent American message. While this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday the Japanese government also launched as attack against Malaya.

Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.

Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam.

Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.

Last night Japanese forces attacked Wake Island.

And this morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

As commander in chief of the Army and Navy I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us. . .

12/7/41 was far, far worse than 9/11/01. Japan bombed Hawaii, destroyed our battleships and killed 2400 Americans and at the same time attacked much of the South Pacific.

As a result, the US entered World War II as a full combatant. On 12/11/41, Nazi Germany and Italy declared war on the US.

Heroic efforts by innumerable persons, including my father, enabled us to to live freely here today in the United States of America.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

while there was a higher death count than 9/11 you cannot really say that Pearl Harbour was far far worse. Pearl Harbour was an attack on a military base as part of an initial war effort from japan. 9/11 was a terrorist attack on civilian buildings as part of a fear campaign by the terrorists. There is a huge huge difference between the 2 attacks.

not to mention, America's attack on japan

    Hiroshima Nagasaki
    Pre-raid population 255,000 195,000
    Dead 66,000 39,000
    Injured 69,000 25,000
    Total Casualties 135,000 64,000

which is only an approximation. and included children.

remember those that gave their lives but don't belittle the tragedy that affected others at different dates.

If I have come off a little short here it is because i lost a family member in 9/11 who had done nothing but go to work that day. There was no reason to compare these 2 attacks and say that one was worse than the other. Just say "lets remember."

      i totally agree with you.

thats just like saying tat 5,000 people died from the flu, and that had to be way worse than 9/11 and 12/7 combined

Well no one should be comparing them by saying who got it worse. There really is nothing to compare. They both got it worse. But that's a very good point though.

My Grandpa fought in WWII. He came very close in getting his head chopped off by the Japanese. If he hung around with his friends that faithful day, I might not exist today.

they stand in my mind together. We, as a nation shouldn't have to pin them against one another. We need to send the message that no attack on us, large or small will be taken lightly.

Thank you again to all our troops.
