I have Filipino relatives in the Philippines that worked in Yemen. They had a five year contract working as a driver. They came back home with a lot of money. They actually bought their house cash and bought a brand new car along with it. I'm not sure if they went back there to work again.
The house looks a lot bigger than it was. Lot of people living there too! It was a big family.
The population of Muscat (capital of Oman) is about 50% local, 50% foreign iirc. HUGE amount of Indian/Sri Lanken/Pakistani laborers there. There are Filipinos there doing a lot of domestic work also. Arabs simply don't do that kind of work, so there is a huge market for foreign laborers or domestic help. An Omani that wants to build a house brings in a crew of guys from India or Pakistan. What they do is build a tiny shack on site, and live in there. They don't spend any money while they are there. As a result, they go home after a year, and have a nice chunk of cash!
