  • bit of a noob question on tires

So it has snowed like a foot and a half here and it sucks. I dd my convertible and have now missed a day of work because i wasn't smart enough to get snowies prior to the snowfall.

question is. right now i have 215/60/r16 tires on my car. My g/f's sister has some snow tires that are 225/70/r16 she isn't using and will sell to me. seriously I need them for about 15 days per year because that is about the most amount of snow we get. I probably won't take them off until the winter ends though. are these tires ok for my car or do i have to shell out 1000 bucks to get 215/60/r16 snow tires i will hardly ever use? probably should have posted this in a different area. and if it matters my rims are still stock on my 99 firebird.

10mm wider and 2.2 inches higher shouldn't hurt. Not sure if you'll get rubbing in the fenderwells though.

    $1,000.00 tires?? Wow!

well slight exageration but close. 160 per tire x 4 + taxes around 750 bucks vs 100 for my g/fs sisters.

the biggest issue i would see is the tires rubbing on the inner fenders on big bumps/ with a lot of weight in the car and hitting bumps.

it will probably rub with 225/70/16

i have 225/60/16 and there is very little clearance between the tires and wheel wells

yea, 70 sidewall is a tall tire. if the roads are decent, and the car wont be driven that much you wont really have a problem. just drive slower.

I checked it out. looks like their isn't enough clearance between the rear bumper portion of the wheel well and the tire. my tires already come pretty close, so it is a no go. oh well. guess I go without for now.

look into hankook winter tires...Ive had mine for 2 years (this is the 3rd year)...Ive managed to get stuck only 3 times with these tires and that was because I didnt have lsd at the time, and I happened to park ontop of black ice (I put the car in drive and the tires were already spinning without being on the gas lol...) I paid like 110-120 a tire...and I love em...**** the last snowfall we just had I was driving by fwd cars getting stuck in the snow and at stop signs...I have noooooo problem what so ever...

I have 215/60/16....that 70 tall tire as mentioned will not fit...I barely have clearance on mine when I turn the wheel at the front...maybe a half inch?...

Go to CTC and get the Goodyear Icetracs 225/60/16 for $135.00 a piece plus balancing.

You should get out the door for $640.00 with taxes.

hankook ipike tires are what I have on my jimmy, they are amazing for the lower price tag

The best snow tire in the industry would be Nokian tires. They are made in finland and are the absolute best.

I sell tires daily, once people go with nokians, they never go back to anything else for the winter.
