Thats why 3.73's or biggger gears and a cam really wakes the 3.8 up, plus weight reduction, You'll have low end with the gears, and top end with the right cam at 2500-3000 rpms and up.
Gears along with a matched stall.

I think 3.42 gear is pretty good. Good at low and high, plus it doesn't suck that much gas compare to lower gears.
If you go with 3.76 or 4's your high end will suffer plus it will it lower MPG. So let's say you DD your car and you're driving on a FWY at 75 mph. If you have the Y87 3.42 stock gears then you'll be at 2600 rpm. If you have 3.76 then you might be at 3400 rpm.
So if have a Y87, give thanks to GM god. I would just add 3200 stall to it to get you out of the dig faster. Ofcourse NO2 would do that too.
With my 3.73's at 75 mph I'm at 2600 rpms, After every shift at WOT my car is at 3200 rpms and above this is with the stock stall. It is perfect for my nitrous setup. I can brake stall the 02' tranny to about 2200 rpms, so I like it alot. I won't get a new stall unless the stock one goes bad. Then it will be a 3000 stall.

Well obviously you can swap cams in any motor and change its power band.
The argument doesn't really apply when we are talking about modded motors. I was just saying, in its stock form, the 3.8 has absolutely no top end power.
I don't think mine was ever stock when I bought it new in Dec 95', I had it lowered, exhaust and intake on it within 2 weeks.LOL

Yeah, you have a totally different set up. I don't think this relates to you. But if we are talking about stock engine with that kind of gear you will be at a higher RPM.
The previous owner of my Fiero modded it by installing 3.56 gears. Stock wise they are 3.02. I'm running 3600 rpm at 65mph. It's awesome from 0-50 but after that it starts becoming anemic at high end. My MPG is horrible.
I remember racing my wifes 95' Mustang GT convert. back then , I would take her up to about 60 or so mph, then she would start passing me. 3rd gear was useless. So yes in stock they are dogs when hitting 3rd gear when I had my M5, don't know about the stock A4's.

i remember runnin my buddies 96 GT back in the day with my M5 bird and could have him easily to like 70ish before he would start to regain ground.... by the time i would hit 70 though, id have a little distance so id just shut her down and proceed to talk ****... he was scared to go much faster so i guess lucky for me we never ran past 70.... LOL!

I know there are a few rpm gear calculators around that might have actual numbers, but 3.73 gears typically run in the upper 2700-2800s at around 70-75mph. They're not quite as high as 3400 rpms in our cars.
As far as how my car compares against a friend's 5.0, well it's the same story. It kept up with her until about 60mph, then her car starts pulling.

Funny, I would have said the exact opposite about 3.8's. They have enough torque down low to get going decently, but they have absolutely no high end power.
I'm guessing your v6 camaro is the fastest car youve driven since youre saying it feels like it has lots of top end. And I don't mean that as an insult, but once you drive something that actually has some top end power, when you go back to the 3.8 youll be really disapointed at the high rpm power.
the fastest car i've driven was an 02 trans am ws6
its once the 3.8 gets going into higher rpms i notice the higher rpm power, than torque in my car. if i floor mine (mines basically stock) there will be like a pause and it will slowly crawl up for a bit then start beastin it. i think the torque is terrible in these cars stock, after i drove a ls1 trans am. as soon as you hit the gas in ls1's you feel the incredible amount of torque. i notice with my car taking my foot off the brake when its in drive will slowly move. you do that in an ls1 its starts to accelerate like your hitting the gas.
oh man i know how you feel. its so awsome to drive one of those. i got to do 90 in it =). you tap the gas look in the rear view mirror and that car that was up your a$$ is like a little dot.

Just for the hell of it, and to help keep future discussions as accurate as possible, here are the RPMs by gear ratio for our cars (with the T5 & stock size tires) at 80 MPH in 5th gear, and the RPM increase from the next taller gear:
So my truck is finally getting some work done, after 17 years, Oil pressure sensor went out and it’s located under the lower intake manifold. Have to...
